USA WOMEN’S U16 FIBA AMERICAS TEAM 2023 RESULTS

MERIDA, MEXICO • JUNE 13-19, 2023

A gold medal finish at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship from Jun. 13-19 in Merida, Mexico, marked the USA’s fourth consecutive and seventh total gold medal in the past eight editions of the event. The team started with a 124-39 victory over Puerto Rico. The U.S. employed a full-court press to help establish a 68-18 lead by halftime. Trinity Jones caught fire in the third, registering 13 of her 19 points in the quarter. By the fourth, the Americans were cycling through lineups and adding to their sizable lead. The U.S.’s 124 points was the team’s highest-scoring opener at a Women’s U16 Americas Championship since 2009 (128-17 vs. Dominican Republic). The USA claimed its second win with a 93-29 victory over Colombia. Rebounding was the story of the game for the Americans, who recorded 78 team rebounds. The effort was led by Jerzy Robinson, who closed the night with 21 boards. Both marks set team and player single-game U.S. records at the event. The U.S. laid claim to the top seed in Group A with a 123-27 victory over Mexico. The players took their first double-digit lead, 21-10, in the final minutes of the first frame and were off and running from there. By the end of the first half, the U.S. owned a 71-17 lead and would build on it in the following quarters. Next the team went on to defeat Dominican Republic, 106-34, in the quarterfinals. The U.S. was able to pull away thanks to some strong defense and production from their front court. The team started the second quarter with a 21-0 run, sparked by the team’s activity on the offensive glass. Against Argentina, the USA saw McKenna Woliczko and Lanie Grant lead the way. Woliczko finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds while Grant contributed 20 points and three assists. The team defeated Argentina handily, 112-48, on the way to the gold medal matchup with Canada. The USA led throughout the first quarter, but Canada stayed within striking distance as the Americans took a slight 19-12 lead into the second. The U.S. would go on a 10-0 run early in the second frame and held Canada without a score until the five-minute mark. The USA entered halftime with a firm grip on the game. The team was set on gold and staved off Canada in the second half for the win, 79-59. Robinson, who led the tournament in total points, displayed her knack for putting the ball in the basket throughout the game. She scored 18 of the team’s 41 first-half points and finished with 24 points. Robinson was named MVP of the tournament and was joined on the All-Star Five by Woliczko, Argentina’s Milagros Morell, Puerto Rico’s Desirek Nieves and Canada’s Cearah Parchment.
