USA WOMEN’S U16 FIBA AMERICAS TEAM 2019 RESULTS
PUERTO AYSEN, CHILE • JUNE 16-22, 2019
With a gold medal at the 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship from June 16-22 in Puerto Aysen, Chile, the USA U16 women have claimed gold in five of the six editions of the event. In its first game on June 17, the USA earned an impressive 114-19 victory against El Salvador that featured 21 points from Londynn Jones, seven assists from Olivia Miles and 13 rebounds from Janiah Barker and Lauren Betts. The USA had another impressive performance with a 109-44 victory over host Chile on June 18. Payton Verhulst led with 21 points; Betts posted 16 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots; Sonia Citron also scored 16 points; and Barker added 15 points and 10 boards. The USA upped its record to 3-0 with a 98-33 victory over Mexico on June 19. The USA broke the game open with a 14-0 run in the first quar- ter. Verhulst was the high scorer with 19 points, Betts led in rebounding with 14 boards and Miles dished out a game-best nine assists. The USA recorded a lopsided 107-32 win over Brazil in the quarterfinals on June 20. Citron had 16 points, while Betts finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Jones added 14 points, Miles was credited with 11 points and five assists and Aaliyah Moore had 10 points and five assists. The USA once again was propelled by its defense in a 103-30 win over Puerto Rico in the semifinals on June 21. The USA held Puerto Rico to just 19.4% from the field (13-67 FGs), forced 30 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 65-36. Betts led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds; Barker scored 15 points and hauled in a game-best 13 rebounds; and Saylor Poffenbarger added 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The USA women defeated Canada 87-37 to capture the gold medal on July 22. Verhulst led the USA with 18 points, Citron contributed 13 and
Poffenbarger added 10 points. With 14 rebounds, Betts helped the USA dominate the glass by a 54-37 margin. Verhulst was named MVP and joining her on the all-tournament team were the USA’s Betts and Citron. In the bronze medal game, Chile topped Puerto Rico 59-49.
