USA WOMEN’S U16 FIBA AMERICAS TEAM 2013 RESULTS
CANCUN, MEXICO • JUNE 19-23, 2013
The 2013 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team prepared to take on the competition in the 2013 FIBA U16 Americas Championship from June 19-23 in Cancun, Mexico. The team not only lived up to expectations, cruising past five opponents en route to the gold medal by an incredible margin of 63.8 points per game. Twenty points from eventual tournament MVP Asia Durr led the USA past Brazil 76-20 in its opening game on June 19. Katie Lou Samuelson added nine points and six rebounds, while De’Janae Boykin had eight points and six rebounds and Lauren Cox had seven points and eight boards. Against Argentina the following day, the USA led comfortably at halftime before outscoring Argentina 38-6 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open on its way to a 98-28 win. Arike Ogunbowale contributed 15 points; Boykin finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds; and Samuelson added 11 points and eight rebounds. Capitalizing on its depth and size, the USA overpowered Costa Rica for a lopsided 106-19 win. Holding Costa Rica to just eight made field goals for the entire game, the U.S. offense featured seven players in double-digit scoring. The USA took control of its semifinal contest against host Mexico in the first quarter and never looked back, sailing in for a 101-29 win to advance to the gold medal game. Three players finished with 16 points, including Samuelson; Cox, who added eight rebounds; and Ogun- bowale, who collected four steals. In a battle of undefeated teams that saw the game tied 27-all at halftime, the USA rode a 31-7 third quarter to an eventual 82-48 win over Canada, capturing the gold medal with conviction. In the bronze medal game, Brazil beat host Mexico 70-56.
