USA WOMEN’S U16 FIBA AMERICAS TEAM 2009 RESULTS

Topping opponents by an average of 70.0 points per game, the 2009 USA Women’s U16 National Team went undefeated to capture the inau- gural FIBA U16 Americas Championship gold medal in convincing fashion Aug. 10-14 at Juan de la Barrera Gym in Mexico City. The red, white and blue opened play on Aug. 10 with a 128-17 blowout of Dominican Republic that featured 21 points and four 3-pointers from Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, followed by 14 points from Justine Hartman. The USA held Dominican Republic to a total of six made baskets and two made free throws for the entire game while shooting 63.4 percent and dishing out 22 assists. The following afternoon, Betnijah Laney tallied 20 points to lead seven U.S. players in double figures as the American women easily overpow- ered Puerto Rico 114-37 on Aug. 11. Hartman again added 14 points, followed by 12 from Ariel Massengale. The USA wrapped up pool play and secured the No. 1 seed into the semifinals with a 93-33 win over Argentina on Aug. 12. The U.S. defense held Argentina to 18.5 percent from the field (12-65 FGs) and forced 28 turnovers as Elizabeth Williams tallied 18 points, followed by 16 points and eight rebounds from Breanna Stewart. Mosqueda-Lewis and Massengale teamed up for 24 and 23 points, respectively, as the USA crushed Brazil 105-54 in the semifinals on Aug. 13. The USA shot 53.7 percent from 3-point (15-28 3-point FGs), including 5-of-8 from deep by Massengale and 4-of-6 from Jordan Adams, who finished with 12 points. Following a first quarter fight from Canada, the USA outscored its opponent by 20 points in the second quarter to help secure an early lead and an impressive 103-52 win and the gold medal on Aug. 14. Williams, who led five U.S. players in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 U16 Championship.
