Living Locally Fair draws huge crowd had a close working arrangement during the past few years of co-hosting the fair and McPhail credits the students with providing one of the most favourable impressions of the event.

Saturday morning at Saint Thomas Aqui- nas Catholic High School and the atrium front hallways as well as several rooms are jampackedwith people browsing what almost seems to be an indoor farmers’ mar- ket of tables and booths with all manner of taste-tempting foods, one-of-a-kind knickknacks, fashionable winter clothing, and other sundries. It was Living Locally Fair weekend in the village of Russell and it almost seemed like all of EasternOntario had come to visit. Which is more than fine as far as Lindley McPhail is concerned. One of the organiz- ers of this year’s annual event, sponsored through the Russell and District Horticul- tural Society, McPhail kept busy all day schmoozing with both vendors and browsers along with her proper duty of making sure everything ran smooth during the fair. «It’s been great,» McPhail said, during a short pause in between her travels. «The ven- dors are thrilled and the only real complaint I’ve had from anyone is how long it takes to go around and see everything.» McPhail laughed about that comment on this year’s fair setup. Besides the main showcase set up inside the school’s cafeto- rium/common roomarea, the vendor booths are tucked away left and right of the main entrance of the school inside about half a dozen or more classrooms, with large yel- low directional arrows pointing the way for people to go in search of them. At the door, several STA students take turns serving as greeters and also as helpers both for shoppers needing an assist to get their parcels to their vehicles and for the vendor who requires a hand carrying in a display table or some boxes of goods. The horticultural society and the school have

«The exhibitors are just blown away by how polite the students are and how help- ful,» McPhail said, crediting STA teachers Ann Jackson and KathyMack with organiz- ing the volunteer student force. «We couldn’t have done it without them.» By day’s end, somewhere between 3000 and 4000 people have wandered around the fair stalls, browsing and shopping. There were 134 exhibitors spread around the school as part of this year’s Living Locally Fair and McPhail thinks that is the upper limit that organizers can manage without overwhelming everyone. «I have a waiting list of people who would like to be here,» she said, adding that the breakdown of exhibitors continues to be 50 per cent dealing with local food and bev- erage, 25 per cent the arts in a variety of forms, and the remainder community health and wellness and environmentally-friendly products.
