USA MEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING SEPTEMBER 2018 RESULTS

The USA opened the World Cup Qualifying second round with a pair of impressive victories, defeating Uruguay 114-57 in Las Vegas, then going on the road to defeat Panama 78-48 in Panama City. Frank Mason III led the USA with 16 points and eight assists. Chasson Randle tallied 15 points in 23 minutes. Derrick White contributed 14 points. Dwayne Bacon and Henry Ellenson both chipped in 10 points each. USA played superb defense from the start, forcing 18 turnovers. The U.S. dished out 30 assists, while Uruguay finished with 12. USA outrebounded Uruguay 45 to 27, and had a 24-6 edge in points generated from turnovers. Moreover, USA finished with a commanding 18-2 lead on fast break points. USA jumped out to a 22-7 lead with two minutes to go in the first quarter. Uruguay as a team shot a meager 18-of-55 from the field, and a staggering 4-of-22 from the perimeter. Against Panama, the USA shot just 33.3 percent (6-18 FGs) from the field in the first quarter but the Americans’ defense frustrated Panama into 2-of-12 shooting (16.7 percent) and forced five turnovers as the USA led 18-7 after the first 10 minutes. Behind points from four different players during a 10-2 run to open the third quarter, the U.S. expanded its lead to 46-25 and Panama never recovered. The USA finished the night shooting 42.6 percent from the field, including 9-of-27 from 3-point. Panama was held to a cold 31.1 percent from the field and made just 5-of-30 from 3-point. Hearn led the balanced U.S. scoring attack with 12 points, Dwayne Bacon added 10 points, while Trice, Moore and Jameel Warney each ac- counted for eight points. Controlling the glass with a 50-34 margin, Ellenson grabbed 11 boards, Warney added eight and White was credited with six rebounds. The U.S. forced 17 Panama turnovers and the USA committed just 12.
