USA WOMEN’S U18 AMERICUP TEAM 20’24 RESULTS
BUCARAMANGA, COLOMBIA • JUNE 17-23, 2024
The 2024 USA captured its 12th FIBA U18 AmeriCup title with head coach Teri Moren leading the team to the title with a perfect 6-0 record. Ten athletes made their USA Basketball national team debuts in Colombia, including Sienna Betts, Jasmine Davidson, Kayleigh Heckel, Madi- son Francis, Zakiyah Johnson, Jordan Lee, Leah Macy, Alivia McGill, Arianna Roberson and Kennedy Smith. The USA cruised through Group B play with three convincing wins, besting Brazil 97-51, Puerto Rico 102-22 and Mexico 115-20. The 125-27 quarterfinal victory over Dominican Republic was the third consecutive game the United States recorded an 80+ point win (previ- ous 80-point win came in 2008), marking the first time the USA hit that differential three times in one tournament. The 98-point win was the USA’s largest since a 119-point victory (143-24) over Bolivia in 2004. As defense continued to reign supreme in the semifinals - a 109-32 showing vs. Argentina - the U.S. recorded 13 of 14 quarters (dating back to the 3rd quarter of the Puerto Rico) in which they allowed 10 points or less, outscoring the opposition 421-85 in that span. The win over Argentina set up a fifth consecutive USA-Canada gold medal game, the previous four of which belonged to the red, white and blue. The game was, by far, the closest the Americans played all week as they came out with an 80-69 gold medal W. With the game tied at 10 with 5:03 to go in the first quarter, the United States closed the period on a 13-4 advantage to take a 23-14 lead. Canada didn’t break, coming back to tie the game at 36 toward the end of the second half before the USA took a 3-point lead into the locker room. At the 4:00 mark of the 3rd quarter, the U.S. led 49-47 before closing the quarter on a 9-2 run, fueled by a Joyce Edwards 3 and then 6 straight points from Smith for a 58-51 USA advantage going into the last frame. The first double-digit lead of the game for either team came after the U.S. moved a 60-57 lead to 69-59 on a Kayleigh Heckel 3-pointer with 4:54 to play. The Americans led by 7 points or more the rest of the way. The USA scored 628 points through six games, winning each by an average of 67.8 points. The team’s total points were the most all-time by a U.S. team at the event. The U.S. held opponents to 21.8% (80-367 FG) from the field and 18.5% (20-108 3FG) from 3, while forcing 29.5 turnovers and capitalizing with 38.3 points scored on them. Edwards was honored as tournament MVP while Edwards and Betts were named to the All-Star 5 squad.
