USA WOMEN’S U18 AMERICAS TEAM 2016 RESULTS

VALDIVIA, CHILE • JULY 13-17, 2016

Led by Suzie McConnell-Serio, the USA captured its eighth-straight and ninth overall U18 gold from July 13-17 in Valdivia, Chile. USA forward Lauren Cox was named tournament MVP. The USA opened with an impressive 117-32 defeat of Guatemala. Chennedy Carter had 17 points; Sidney Cooks added 16 points and eight rebounds; Ruthy Hebard had 12 points; Jeannie Boehm accounted for 10 points and nine rebounds; Tyasha Harris dished out eight assists; Evina Westbrook grabbed six steals; and Megan Walker had 11 points. Trailing in the first quarter, the USA got on track and steadily pulled away from Brazil for an 80-59 win on July 14. Cox led with 13 points and nine boards; Carter added 12 points; Walker contributed 11; and Harris had 10 points. Dana Evans had six assists. Leading from start to finish, the USA wrapped up preliminary round play with a 110-52 win over Venezuela on July 15. The USA drained six 3-pointers in the first quarter to help compile a 36-17 lead. Four of those came from Amber Ramirez, who finished with 18 points and six assists. Cox added 14 points, 10 boards and five blocked shots. The U.S. defense starred in a 104-36 win over Puerto Rico on July 16, giving up just three points in the second quarter. Cox grabbed 10 of her 13 rebounds in the first quarter, while Carter led with 17 points and four assists; Cooks, Valerie Higgins and Walker each added 11. Outscoring Canada 33-14 in the third quarter, the USA took control in the second half on its way to a 109-62 victory and a gold medal. The USA had six players in double-digit scoring and committed just three turnovers while forcing Canada into 24. Harris led with 18 points, four steals and three assists; Cox had 15 points; and Walker had 12 points and four assists.
