The 2000 USA Basketball Women’s Junior World Championship Qualifying Team stormed to the gold medal at the COPABA Women’s Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. Leading the way offensively for the U.S. was Alana Beard, who averaged a team high 15.4 points per game and also chipped in 4.4 rebounds per game and a team leading 3.8 steals per game. Also scoring in double figures for the U.S. were Diana Taurasi with 12.6 ppg. and Laurie Koehn with 12.4 ppg. The U.S. dominated on the boards behind the efforts of Nicole Powell, who pulled down a team leading 6.5 rebounds per game and Ebony Hoffman, who hit the boards for 5.6 rebounds per game. The U.S. set the tone early in the tournament as it dismantled Mexico 100-28 in the first round of preliminary play on July 26. Beard and Aminita Yanni each tossed in 23 points and all 12 players again scored as the U.S. followed up its opener with a 115-26 victory over Puerto Rico on July 27. Closing out preliminary round play with a pulverizing 98-51 victory over host Argentina, the United States contingent again saw everybody score for the third time in as many games and leading the attack were Beard and Koehn with 24 and 22 points, respectively. The USA continued to dominate its opponents in the semifinals as it handed Brazil a 79-57 loss to advance to the gold medal game. In their closest game of the tournament, Taurasi stepped up to bury 7-of-11 3-pointers and finished with a team high 26 points. In their fifth and final game of the qualifying tournament, the Americans manhandled previously unbeaten Cuba, 69-46, to capture the gold medal and complete their five-game sweep. The USA, led by a game high 15 points and seven rebounds from Beard, never trailed in the championship game.
