USA WOMEN’S U18 AMERICUP TEAM 1992 RESULTS
GUANAJUATO, MEXICO • AUGUST 23-29, 1992
The United States entered the 1992 COPABA Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament hoping for a repeat of the USA’s gold medal finish at the 1988 qualifying tournament. However, after going 4-0 en route to the gold medal contest the USA met also unbeaten Brazil and lost a heartbreaker 80-70 and finished with the silver medal. Opening play against Canada on Aug. 23, the USA held a 32-27 halftime lead and pulled to the eventual 67-56 victory. Sara Wilson posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to pace the red, white and blue. After running out to a lopsided 43-16 halftime advantage against Mexico on Aug. 24, the Americans cruised through the second half to the 89-42 win. Shauna Tubbs led the charge with 17 points and Angela Aycock grabbed a team high 11 rebounds. Closing out preliminary round action against Puerto Rico on Aug. 25, the USA kept its winning streak alive after dismantling the islanders 106- 54. Rebecca Lobo scored a team high 14 points. The USA needed all of Tiffany Woosley’s tournament best 23 points against Cuba in the Aug. 27 semifinal. After spotting Cuba a 49-31 half- time lead, the United States turned up its offensive heat in the second half, outscoring Cuba 56-42, to earn the hard-fought 91-87 decision and the right to play for the gold medal. Brazil also advanced to the gold medal contest with an unblemished 4-0 record and after 20 minutes of play the United States owned a slim 40-38 advantage over its South American rivals. However, just as the U.S. had turned the tide on Cuba in the second half of the semifinal game the day before, Brazil outscored the United States by 12 points in the second stanza and came out on top 80-70. Aycock scored 18 points for the U.S., Woosley added 12 and Niesa Johnson pitched in 11 points.
