JUNE 2023
MINDFULNESS IS THE KEY TO HEALTHY SCROLLING
LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA TO YOUR BENEFIT
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, and YouTube: These platforms inspire us, motivate us, provide a space to embrace our creativity, and help us to keep in touch with others. However, just as quickly as social media builds us up, it can tear us down. On June 21,
we celebrate National Selfie Day, and June 30 is World Social Media Day, dedicated to embracing the positive things in today’s social media platforms. In our home, Nicole and I are firm believers that you tend to become like the people with whom you surround yourself. We often adopt the same habits and behaviors of our spouses and friends, and the interests and actions of our peers become ours. This (sometimes scary) reality is a big reason it’s so
In the online world, I tend to surround myself with process-driven people and professionals, as I’ve found that’s one of the best ways to motivate and align myself.
In the online world, I tend to surround myself with process-driven people and professionals, as I’ve found that’s one of the best ways to motivate and align myself. However, depending on how you engage, how much time you spend getting lost in posts, videos, and photos, or whom you follow, social media can become unhealthy without your realizing it.
important to surround ourselves with people we trust and who have an infectious sense of positivity. The same is true of social media — those we follow and engage with on social media platforms have an impact on us — sometimes a larger one than we even realize. This is why social media can be extremely powerful and positive, or it can leave us in a dark or dangerous place if misused. Social media should promote growth and motivation. It should challenge you to embrace positivity and bring a smile to your face. You must be careful that the content you view or the individuals you interact with don't drag you down and make you feel uncomfortable or bad about yourself. You should not feel the need to compare, strive to keep up, or long for something different or something “more.” Instead, it should empower you to bloom and embrace the great things in your life. It should challenge you to be the best version of yourself and be successful.
From a personal injury standpoint, I’d like to remind everyone to be careful what you share on these platforms. We cherish our clients’ happiness and want the very best for their case results. But we also know insurance companies will stop at nothing and always search for something to undermine our clients' cases. If you happen to have a positive day or a good moment and want to share, we urge you to think twice while your case is in process. Those moments can potentially be used against you, even if they are taken out of context. We urge you to stay mindful and always keep your guard up! Ultimately, the unique social media platforms we have today are fun, resourceful, practical, and engaging — just remember who you are and how you can best utilize it to benefit you and your relationships. Happy (and healthy) scrolling!

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Butler did no such thing. She knew Black women and other women of color wanted cosmetic options that better suited their skin tones and continued making her vegan, cruelty-free, and affordable lip products. Butler did not find success overnight, and it might have seemed the sharks had a point. But she began to make headway into retail outlets, and in 2022, The Lip Bar closed $6.7 million in seed funding. The company now has a flagship store in Detroit and sits on shelves in over 500 Walmart and 750 Target stores. Butler announced in early 2023 that The Lip Bar is now the largest Black-owned makeup brand on Target shelves. Former first lady Michelle Obama and actress Taraji P. Henson have both worn the company’s shades. As her company continues to expand and roll out new products, Butler doesn’t shy away from her less-successful past — she actively celebrates it. The Lip Bar CEO regularly tells her story and even placed a billboard in her hometown of Detroit, noting how she beat the odds. It read: “‘Shark Tank’ told me to quit. 10 years and 2 million units sold. Thanks, Mr. Wonderful.” These days, even Mr. Wonderful is on board. In a 2022 interview, O’Leary admitted that he got it wrong. “They were facing an almost impossible task,” he said. “They pulled it off, so you gotta applaud them.” Impressed by how she beat the odds, MarthaStewart.com asked Butler last year what advice she had for other entrepreneurs. “Keep working towards your goals,” she responded. “Because your idea will never become reality if you don’t do it.”
FROM ‘SHARK TANK’ REJECT TO STAR CEO HOW MELISSA BUTLER OVERCAME FAILURE
Melissa Butler, CEO of skin care and cosmetics company The Lip Bar, had her first brush with fame when she appeared on a 2015 episode of “Shark Tank.” But it was almost her last. The “sharks” not only didn’t like her idea — they mercilessly skewered it. Butler’s journey began in 2012 when she decided the beauty industry needed more diversity and natural ingredients. So, she started mixing her own lipstick shades in her kitchen. But when she presented her bold and beautiful creations on “Shark Tank,” the experts called them “clown makeup.” Kevin O’Leary, also known as “Mr. Wonderful,” was particularly harsh. He told her the cosmetics market was oversaturated and that she should quit while she could.
OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST “Case Barnett Law is an outstanding law firm that helped me through a lawsuit involving a traumatic brain injury. They have a wonderful team. Their paralegal Paige Smoot was always prompt in keeping me updated on my case. Conor Mulvaney, my attorney, was especially helpful. He took the time to explain
“I have practiced criminal law and been a trial lawyer for almost 30 years. When I suffered a catastrophic injury, I spoke with three different lawyers who I had known for many years to include Case Barnett. The other two lawyers were hesitant to take the case because I had signed a waiver — one refused it altogether. Case, on the other hand, did a little research and enthusiastically agreed to represent me. He assigned his outstanding and experienced associate Dena Weiss to work the case and that was it. About 24 months after hiring him, I had a very healthy six-figure settlement, a far cry from the pessimism of the other lawyers. Since hiring Case, I have heard of many other clients he has gotten good results for, and tellingly, I know of several lawyers from different fields who have referred him cases. As such, I would enthusiastically recommend Case Barnett and the Law Offices of Case Barnett for any personal injury matter.” –Marine W.
each step in the legal process and made me feel like I had someone in my corner. More than any of that, Conor went the extra mile to get to know me and the pain I went through. It really made me feel like he and the law firm had my best interest in mind. I am very grateful to have had Conor Mulvaney and Case Barnett Law represent me and would recommend their services to anyone and everyone.” –Gregory W.

SEAFOOD PASTA SALAD
All of us, in some way or another, are shaped by technology. Many use phones and laptops for work. Some enjoy playing video games. Others rely on gadgets like Kindles and tablets for entertainment. We are likely guilty of watching too much television or surfing the web a bit longer than we should. While technology is extremely broad and offers many ways to connect, unwind, stay connected and entertained, we continually stay “plugged in” for far too long. Unplugging is a necessity in a world connected via technology and various social platforms — especially when it comes to precious family time. Life is short. Take time to embrace human relationships and connect organically with those who matter the most. If you have children, you know they crave your attention and are intuitive. Young ones pick up cues and know when they don’t have your full attention or are sharing your focus with a laptop or phone. Even if you are hanging out doing nothing, unplugging and being physically and emotionally present is essential. You’ll notice your relationships, attitudes, and happiness are enhanced when you do that. These genuine exchanges improve how we interact with one another. It’s important to carve out time for your loved ones without phones or electronics, especially with summer approaching. Plan a hike, spend time in the backyard, visit the beach, or take a trip to the local zoo or park. There are so many ways to unplug for the day, or just a few hours, to make time for those who matter the most. PUTTING TECHNOLOGY ON THE BACKBURNER HERE’S TO UNPLUGGING!

Summer has finally arrived, and many of us will be going on weeklong excursions to the coast to get some much-needed rest and relaxation by the beach. For years, the beach has been one of the most popular summertime destinations for Americans, with millions of us flocking to the coast every year. If you’re planning to hit the sand this summer, you should prepare some exciting activities, so you and your family or travel partners can create memories that will last a lifetime. MASTER THE WAVES OCEAN ACTIVITIES THE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL LOVE
a great way to explore the underwater world. You’ll be able to spot fish, crustaceans, and other sea life without needing extensive training. Those who regularly go snorkeling see it as a form of therapy that helps them relieve stress and anxiety. Feeling more relaxed and at peace will help make your vacation feel even more magical. Grab a board. If you want to experience something slightly more intense, you can try some of the many ocean activities involving a board. First-time ocean-goers will love using a boogie board or bodyboard to ride the waves into shore. Those who are more experienced may enjoy surfing for the first time or renting a standing paddleboard. Many beaches on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts have paddleboard rentals or surfing lessons. Be on the lookout at your vacation destination if you want to take advantage of these exciting activities. Tour the ocean. You may want to get away from the beach and experience open waters beyond the shore. If that’s the case, you’ll want to see if your vacation destination offers glass-bottom boat or submarine tours. Some beaches even have whale-watching adventures, which provide an excellent opportunity to see some of nature’s largest creatures in their natural habitat.
Here are a few oceanside activities you’ll want to check out on your vacation.
Explore through snorkeling. Many people want to try scuba diving while on vacation but don’t have the time, training, and finances required to go on an excursion. That being said, you can get pretty close to the scuba-diving experience by snorkeling. Using a snorkel in the ocean, especially in flat water, is
