A glimpse into the people who are the heart and soul of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee
RUTH NICOLAUS For The North Platte Telegraph JERRY “DOC” THOMPSON
Jerry “Doc” Thompson has made animals his lifelong work, and helps with them at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, too. A veterinarian, he grew up on a farm near Sutherland, and when he helped his dad pull a calf as the mother cow had difficulties in delivery, he decided he wanted to be a vet. After veterinary school at Iowa State, he started his own practice: Stockmen’s Vet Clinic in 1965, and has worked there his entire career. He began helping with veterinary duties at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in the mid 1990s, and became a committee member in 2004. “I help with fencing, cleaning, whatever needs done,” Thompson said. “I’m just another committee member. I’m just a regular old trooper when it comes to getting things done.” Jack Morris, former committee chair, noted that Thompson keeps the committee abreast of equine viruses that may be on the horizon, and takes care of health papers for cowboys’ and cowgirls’ horses. Thompson works alongside Jerry Woodruff, also a veterinarian. The two trade off duties and coordinate supplies, making sure vaccines and other medicines needed are on-site in case of an emergency. Thompson loves the rodeo atmosphere. “I’ve always loved the business,” he said. “And I enjoy the cowboy end of it. It’s quite competitive, but cooperative. There’s a lot of cooperation between competitors and I enjoy that.” At 82 years young, Thompson has sold his practice but is a working partner, working three days a week and on call as needed. He is married to Cindy; he has three children and seven grandchildren. HANK KNISLEY Hank Knisley has been involved with the Buffalo Bill Rodeo since 2000. The Illinois native moved to Nebraska

He is married to Karen; their combined family includes six children and ten grandchildren. JEFF WHITE Jeff White was a bareback rider, bull rider and team roper before he became a Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee member. The Hershey native grew up competing in the Neb. State Rodeo Association. In the mid 1980s, he switched from the roughstock events to the team roping. He became a rodeo committee member in 2005, and helps mainly with grooming the arena, making sure the conditions are safe for animals and contestants. He is in
charge of equipment on the grounds and is responsible for repairs, making sure gates swing correctly, and if something needs repaired, he fixes it. Jeff secures the team roping and breakaway cattle, and seldom misses a work night, according to Shelli Arensdorf. Jeff has a vested interest in rodeo; his sons are professional team ropers. “The TV never changes from the Cowboy Channel at my house,” he said. “It is constantly on. I am a huge rodeo fan, and as long as I can help with a rodeo, I’m game.” He is an auctioneer and owner of White’s Auction Service.
in 1985 and to North Platte in 1999, and four years later, was asked to be on the NLD board. He served a term from 2003- 2006 and then was asked to join the Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee. As a rodeo committee man, Hank can be found hanging posters around town, keeping the grounds free of weeds, and, his biggest job, helping with hospitality. He makes sure food and beverages are ordered and delivered, starts the coffee in the morning for slack, and keeps the hospitality area clean. “He likes to be behind the scenes,” said Shelli Arensdorf, also a committee person. “No matter what is asked of him, he jumps in and does it.” He volunteers in other ways throughout the community, including at North Platte St. Patrick High School, where he served as a board member and board president. He likes being part of the rodeo. “I enjoy working with the people. They’re fun and everybody gets along.” Volunteering is important to him. “It’s first and foremost about giving your time,” he said. “At the end of the day, the Book tells us we’re supposed to help, and that’s really what it’s all about, serving people.”

She’s one of very few in the equine world who has combined competitive dance with trick riding, and fans love it! “I can do a cartwheel off my horse, a somersault, and a back walkover,” she said. She also Roman rides: standing on the backs of two horses, one foot on each horse, as they gallop around the arena. It takes a trustworthy horse to carry its rider at top speeds, when the rider is hanging off the side of the horse or vaulting from the horse to the ground and back. Her horse Elite “can be more spooky, so I have to think about which jumps or dance moves will keep her calm and not excite her as much,” she said. As for the rodeo, Marty liked being part of the team that put on a good show. For him, the satisfaction was in “being able to give something back to the city of North Platte. We enjoyed a great life there, and it was nice to be involved. It was fun to continue to build the celebration and make it something special for the people of North Platte and the surrounding area.” Both Petersens loved the people they worked with. “I can’t say enough good things about the (rodeo queen association) committee,” Cindy said. “They are phenomenal people. We’re a family, we really are.” “Absolutely the people,” Marty said. “The NebraskalandDays board, fellow rodeo committee members, the contract personnel, the cowboys, everyone involved with the production.” The Trail Boss Award is given each year to a volunteer or volunteers who exemplify volunteer work, going above and beyond the call of duty to support the rodeo or its auxiliary events.

Cindy also served four years as Nebraska’s national director for the Miss Rodeo America contest. As a national director, she spent ten days in Las Vegas at the national pageant, with setup, tear down, decorating, cleaning, and more, for the multi-day contest. The couple has retired from their careers and live on the same ranch Cindy’s great-great-grandfather homesteaded, near Cotesfield. Cindy is still chair of the queen pageant, but Marty is no longer on the rodeo committee. For Cindy, her favorite part of “queening” has been getting to know the cowgirls each year. “I just love the girls,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to see them grow and mature as young adults.” When the couple lived in North Platte, they gave each year’s queen a key to their house, in case they were passing through and needed a place to stay. “It wouldn’t be unusual to find a past Miss Rodeo Nebraska, even when they didn’t hold the title, at the house,” Cindy said. “I really enjoyed that. The couple have dedicated decades to the event, and to the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association as well. Marty grew up in North Platte and began volunteering with the NebraskalandDays committee in the early 1990s. He served as president from 1994-1995, chairing the corporate sponsorship program and the concert committee. When his term was over, he immediately became a member of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee. He and Cindy, a native of Cotesfield, Neb., married in 1998 and she began helping out right away. “We’d have workdays at the arena,” Marty remembers, “and she’d haul a grill out there, and cook hamburgers for the crew that was working. It slowly evolved to the point where she got involved.” The Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant had moved from Burwell to North Platte, and she began helping with it. “Being the go-getter that she is,” he said, “she moved up through the ranks of that organization.” When a person spends thirty-plus years on a committee, he does about anything and everything there is to do. Marty helped with numerous construction projects, hired contract acts, helped set up and tear down, was liaison with security, helped hang banners, helped with sponsorships, and did the many tasks that need to be done to produce a rodeo. THE NORTH PLATTE TELEGRAPH 2024 NLD BUFFALO BILL RODEO SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 2024 PAGE 5 FROM COWBOY TO CLOWN North Platte rodeo was starting point for Oklahoma man’s career change from steer wrestler to rodeo clown RUTH NICOLAUS For The North Platte Telegraph N
He worked for Beutler three years, hauling livestock to Beutler rodeos across the nation: not only North Platte, but Burwell, Phillipsburg, Kan., Tucson, Ariz., Austin, Texas, Greeley, Colo., and more. In 2010, he worked as clown at a bull riding in Pretty Prairie, Kan., and it began to dawn on him: he could make a living as a clown. Rumford has always had a quick wit and sense of humor, but he never wanted to clown. He had made connections with rodeo committees and other stock contractors as he worked for Bennie Beutler, and he asked them for jobs. Rumford fit the clown jobs in between working for Beutler at their rodeos, until one day somebody said, “you’re going to have to decide if you want to do this rodeo clown deal, or work for Bennie, because we’re all finding you jobs and you’re turning them down.” So Rumford told Beutler he was quitting. “He did not take it well,” Rumford said. “He told me, if you’re going to tell jokes, get in the truck and tell jokes on the CB, because you’re not quitting.” But Rumford did, and he’s never looked back. “I knew these committee members, and they knew I was hilarious, because I was always cracking jokes. When I called and told them I was going to switch to clowning, I had more of an advantage, because they knew who I was.” Rumford quickly moved into full-time work as a rodeo clown, and he’s won two of the PRCA’s most prestigious awards for his category: the Clown of the Year ten times, and the Coors Man in the Can (for barrelman) three times. It all comes back to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. “North Platte is where I thought the end of the road was,” he said. It was “God’s timing,” he said. “It’s a wild story.”
orth Platte is a special place for rodeo clown Justin Rumford. It’s where his life changed and he followed a totally different path, to stardom as a rodeo clown instead of a cowboy. The Kansas native, who now lives in Ponca City, Okla., grew up in rodeo and competed in high school and college, with big plans to be a professional steer wrestler and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the pinnacle of pro rodeo. But in North Platte, he had what he calls his “mental breakdown.” It was 2008 and he was steer wrestling full time, nationwide, with the plans to be one of the top fifteen steer wrestlers in the nation at the end of the season so he could compete for a world title at the National Finals. But it wasn’t to be. In North Platte, he broke the barrier to add a ten second penalty to his time, which would have won him first place. He was out of money - $36 to his name, a wife at home, and his dreams were dashed. “I was sitting on the bucking chutes at noon, after slack, all by myself,” he said. He told his traveling partners Shane Henderson and Dru Melvin to go on to the next rodeo without him. He was done. “I had no ride home, nowhere to go, and I was about to cry.” That’s when his destiny began to change. Stock contractor Bennie Beutler walked up and said, “what the hell’s wrong with you?” Rumford told him, “I didn’t make it. I’m going to go home and get a job.” Beutler, who provides the bucking horses and bulls for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, offered him a job, driving truck and livestock to rodeos, with the chance to continue to steer wrestle at the rodeos he worked. So he worked full-time for Beutler, steer wrestling on the side.

so I didn’t take him back there after that. “He’s a good-strided, fast running horse that prefers room to get running. Once we learned that about him, we quit taking him to small arenas.” Hilman will have three other horses in her trailer when she comes to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Her second horse, Bridget, which was her backup horse at the 2023 National Finals Rodeo, and two young five-year-old mares, who need seasoning, will be with her. She and her husband, Ty, raise and train barrel horses. Their stud, TSH Pendleton, is the foundation of their program. Hillman likes competing at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. “I like the setup, and the committee is really nice there. You can put pens up, too. It’s nice to start the summer season that way, when committees are nice and have good ground. It makes it refreshing and makes us feel good about leaving.” Truck’s registered name is Cuatro Fame; his sire is Dash Ta Fame, a famous barrel racing stud; his dam goes back to Streakin Six, another famous barrel racing horse. Truck is Hillman’s “gold child,” she said. “He’s my good old faithful, my reliable. I know what he’s going to do, every run.” Hillman and Truck will compete on June 13, the second night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte.

He loves to be pampered.” Hillman’s mother-in-law, Ceri Artzer, treats him with a machine that applies electro-therapy, electrical impulses that stimulate muscles and tissue. “He absolutely eats that up,” she said. “He knows, when she comes to get him, what is going to happen.” He also does not like to share attention. “He does not like to see anybody else get petted or get cookies,” Hillman laughed. “He gets depressed when I’m home and riding other horses. He’s a hoot.” Hillman has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo eight times, but has only ridden Truck there one year. He scored 87 points on the Beutler and Son horse Rage for the win, the buckle, and a check for $2913. It was the first trip to North Platte for the 24-year-old, a resident of Dodge City, Kan. He had gotten his PRCA permit in 2022, but didn’t think he was ready for the pros. “I was trying to build my confidence and compete at some open rodeos,” he said. “I was thinking, (North Platte) is a big rodeo, and I wasn’t quite ready for it.” But ready he was, winning against some of the biggest names in saddle bronc riding and not being intimidated by them. “I looked down the line (of chutes) and saw all of those bronc riders, and I thought, ‘just go do your job.’ It was definitely a big moment for me to be on
that stage, with those guys, riding against them.” When he’s not rodeoing, Jacob trains horses and day works for area ranches, often getting up early in the morning to start the day. “I try to ride broncs more than work,” he said. “It’s more fun to rodeo for a living than it is to wake up at 4 am and go to work all day.” First buckle he won: at age ten, for the barrel racing in Hoxie, Kan. at an NBHA event. His mom made him and his brother barrel race before they did any other rodeo event, to learn how to ride. “It’s very important to ride correctly,” he said, “and learn how to control your horse and learn the frustration of not winning.” Favorite snack: black pepper beef jerky Rodeo accomplishments: 2023 Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo winner; 2x Prairie Circuit Finals qualifier. Family: wife Madison

Jessica McMaster, 2023 Breakaway Roping Champ.
Clayton grew up in Colby, Kan., but now lives in Texas, working with his dad on their farm. First buckle he won: at age 17 at a bull riding school in Derby, Kan. Favorite snack: Tuna packets. “We eat those a lot. We put them on tortilla shells and eat them a bunch.” Family: mom Pattie Stevens and dad Dan Appelhans
“Usually it takes a couple weeks to get the ball rolling again.” As a kid growing up in Colby, Kan., he spent time with his aunt and cousins in Stapleton, and sometimes they’d come to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. It was a big deal to him then, and still is. “I always thought it was cool,” he said. “It was cool when Hadley Barrett would announce my name, and now Randy (Corley) does. I really like the Beutler rodeos.”
Rodeo Assoc. breakaway champ 2022-23; KPRA reserve breakaway champ 2019- 2021; Nebraska State Rodeo Association reserve breakaway champ 2023. Family: husband Dawson Barrel racing champ: Summer Kosel South Dakota barrel racer Summer Kosel rounded the cloverleaf pattern in 17.47 seconds to best the field and win the 2023 barrel racing title. She was aboard her ten-year-old chestnut gelding Firewater French Fame, “Apollo,” who carried her to her first trip to the Wrangler NFR in 2023. She purchased the horse in the fall of 2020, and soon realized his talent. Standing at 14.3 hands, he’s very athletic. “He does stuff that most horses can’t do, in the way he moves,” she said. “He’s muscular and built more like a calf or heel horse than a barrel horse.” Apollo is intelligent and eager to please. “He’s really like a big dog. You can whistle and call his name and he’ll come to you. He’s very, very smart and very kind.” He has his quirks, too. Before he and Summer compete, he pushes himself back on his hind end, paws at the ground, does a leap and shakes his head. “That’s how you know he’s warmed up and ready. He’s like, ‘let’s go.’” Summer and her husband Kevin have four children: daughters Hope, Serenity, and Victory, and son Courage.
Apollo has a special affinity for Courage. “He’ll walk past me to go to him,” she said. At the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Summer finished seventh in the world standings, with over $225,000 in season earnings. Bull riding champ: Clayton Appelhans It was sweet revenge for Clayton Appelhans at last year’s Buffalo Bill Rodeo. The 30 year old cowboy matched up against Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Record Rack’s Overpass for 84 points, a check for $5,520 and the win. It was the second time Clayton had drawn the bull. He’d been on him at the 2022 Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Duncan, Okla., but bucked off. Clayton wanted another try at him. “I was cutting wheat and had turned out of $1000 worth of rodeos because we’d had rain, and I had to stay and help harvest. I saw the draw, and I was like, ‘I’ll ride that bull this time. No doubt about it, he’s mine.’ It was my fault he bucked me off the first time, and it worked out for me, this time.” He farms with his dad in Texas, and doesn’t ride bulls full time. That puts him at a disadvantage. “I usually have pretty rough luck” in North Platte, he said, because the other bull riders have been rodeoing hard for several months while he’s been working.
