Dust containment critical to safer, more efficient coal handling operations In coal handling operations, dust control has become a critical operational, safety and environmental priority, with transfer point design increasingly recognised as one of the most important factors in containing airborne particulate emissions. F rom mines and power stations to export terminals and processing plants, coal dust presents significant risks across the value chain. Beyond housekeeping concerns, uncontrolled dust transmission can compromise worker health, accelerate equipment wear, reduce visibility, increase fire and explosion risk and expose operations to environmental non-compliance. Modern Mining spoke to Dewald Tintinger, Technical Director at Weba Chute Systems, who explains that effective dust containment must begin at the source - within the transfer point itself. “Dust in coal handling systems is far more than an operational inconvenience,” Tintinger says. “It directly affects workforce health and safety, plant reliability, environmental performance and ultimately the cost of operation. In many cases, the transfer point is where these challenges either begin or are effectively controlled.” Coal is particularly prone to dust generation during handling due to its fine particle fractions, dry conditions and the

repeated transfer of material between conveyors, crushers, stockpiles and loading systems. At each transfer point, poorly controlled flow can result in turbulence, impact forces and material degradation, all of which contribute to dust becoming airborne. “This,” Tintinger says, “makes chute design a critical engineering discipline rather than a secondary plant consideration - and this is precisely where Weba Chute Systems focuses its engineering expertise.” Engineering the transfer point to contain dust Traditional chute arrangements often allow coal to free-fall onto receiving conveyors, creating high impact zones and air turbulence that generate dust plumes. Tintinger explains that the key to effective dust suppression lies in controlling both the velocity and trajectory of the coal stream. “The objective is to reduce the kinetic energy that causes fines to disperse into the atmosphere,” he says. “By controlling
