CHAMPS AGAIN

Archery takes the top four male scores and the top four fe- male scores and then adds in the next four high scores. MRA usually has a number of male archers who are competitive and produce for the team. But Coach Williams thinks our female archers are what set us apart, “I try to find four to six good female shooters and coach them up because that gives us the edge. Every team has a #1 and #2 female shooter, but we have a #3 and #4 and that makes the difference.” Contributing to the success of the team this year were Savan- nah Rimmer, Reese Roundtree, Emme Houston, and Lillie Beth Hall along with some great up-and-coming younger female archers. Male shooters include Caleb Potter, John Michael Wilson, Hatcher Swanson, Sachh Kirk, Jonathan Mann, William Hinson, William Holladay, and Jackson Cul- ley. Says Coach Williams, “This team impressed me because they never stopped trying to improve. They never stopped trying to break records. I was pleased with how badly they wanted to be good.” -Beth Yerger

MRA’s Archery Team hit the bullseye again with another State Championship! Coached by Kenny Williams, the team is back-to-back champs and have won the state ti- tle in three of the last six years. According to Coach Wil- liams, “I felt we had the potential to repeat as champions. We had a strong nucleus of returning shooters from the previous team, but we had a few pieces needed to fill the void left by some outstanding graduating seniors.” And fill it he did! Along with exceptional returning archers, he added new team members who produced great results. “It was amazing that we had kids I never expected to partici- pate or compete who became impact players.” Coach Wil- liams attributes much of the team’s success to hard work and practices that last much longer than the actual meets. In fact, a meet consists of three rounds at 10 meters and three rounds at 15 meters, and MRA’s team members typ- ically do 20 rounds of 10 meters and 20 of 15. The result is blistered fingertips that turn into calluses giving our team the edge in pulling back and holding steady.
