TYPES OF SCARRING
There are two types of scarring associated with acne, atrophic and hypertrophic. Atrophic scarring is the type most individuals are left with. This is due to the loss of collagen, tissue malfunction and build-up. Typically, you will hear of this type referred to as ice pick, boxcar or rolling scars due to its appearance and indentations in skin. Luckily, this type of scarring can be softened through advanced aesthetic procedures like chemical peels, micro-needling and CO2 lasers. Hypertrophic scarring is known as keloid scarring. Here we have an increased amount of collagen deposited in a particular area, combined with a decrease in collagenase activity. This scarring is thick, raised and firm. Those with higher Fitzpatrick’s tend to be at a higher risk of this type of scarring. You will also see this type of scarring with deep trauma/injury.
