OUR SPOTLIGHT: ISIAH
Brenda Valle is a mother of three amazing children Isiah(25), Makhi(18), and Mya(15). Brenda has lived in Saint Paul, MN for 35 years and raised her children there as well. On February 26, 2022 Brenda's son Isiah was driving home to get some rest before having to work that morning. When he
was driving through the green light on Cretin and Marshall in Saint Paul, he was struck by a vehicle going 76 mph through the red light and came to a stop 70 feet from the intersection. Isiah was killed at the scene of the crash. The defendant had a blood alcohol level of 0.211. Brenda stated "The actions of the offender on February 26, 2022 have shattered my family and Isiah's siblings no longer have a big brother. This event has changed the way my children see life. The loss of Isiah has been so devastating and it is hard to know this is the rest of my life." Everyday I have to remind myself as I wake that it will be another day I will not see Isiah. I will not hug Isiah, I will not see Isiah's smile, I will not talk to or laugh with Isiah again. Brenda has worked with MADD on and off when she has reached out with questions while going through the legal process. Brenda stated "MADD had knowledge of how the court process works and gave me insight." Isiah's killer received 13 months of treatment, 7 months in jail, and 8 years of probation. Isiah lit up a room with his presence. He was an amazing son, brother, nephew, grandson, and friend. Isiah was thoughtful, outgoing, goal driven, smart, and dedicated. He had a way about him where he was able to talk to anyone. He had such a gregarious and witty personality. To know him was to love him. "I strive to make him proud, not giving up and trying to figure out this new unwanted way of life. I can hear him say "take it minute by minute, day by day mama" I say "thank you, son." and do just that."

WHAT ARE CRIME VICTIM'S RIGHTS Crime Victim's Rights, as we know them today, can be traced back to the 1960's and 1970's. This movement paved the way for many areas we now know, a couple being, victim compensation rights and victim advocacy. What is victim compensation? Victim compensation is provided to victim survivors when, due to the crash, they have experienced an out of pocket loss. When an offender is court ordered to pay restitution they will make a payment to the court administration, which will process the payment and send a check to the victim survivor. Offenders will not have direct contact to the victim survivor when sending a restitution payment.
INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING? Are you, or someone you know, interested in getting involved with MADD? We are always looking for volunteers to help fill the roles of Victim Impact Panel speaking, Impact Panel coordinators, Walk Like MADD committee, Law Enforcement Recognition committee, and much more! Please don't hesitate to reach out to your local staff, or get in contact with our regions office for any questions you may have at 651 523-0802 or email us at mn.state@madd.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
A victim survivor can also try to collect restitution through civil court. Paperwork must be filed before the restitution order can be entered in as a civil judgement.
The civil judgement creates a hold against the offender that will show up on credit checks and other searches until the restitution is paid. The judgement is enforceable for 10 years and can be renewed. Restitution may cover expenses that are a direct result of the crash. An example of these expenses are, medical and dental bills, counseling costs, loss of wages, property losses, and repairing damaged property. When requesting restitution victim survivors should make sure that they have documentation supporting the expenses. Crime victim reparations can also be requested through an application. Reparations can compensate victim survivors for expenses related to the crime, however, it does not compensate for property losses. Victim survivors do not have to wait for any medical, dental, or mental health treatments to be completed prior to applying. At MADD we can assist with all things victims rights. We can help to connect victim survivors to services for restitution as well as mental health providers, civil attorneys and more. At MADD we look towards a future with No More Victims®.
