MAY 2023

Get Movin’ This May! NATIONAL PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH IS HERE

We often take our health for granted. It’s not until we’re injured or getting older that we realize how important it is to

and we spent most weekends at practices and competitions, and I’ll always be grateful for their endless effort and support. Even when I broke my collarbone not once, but twice, they never deterred me!

As for my kids, I can’t wait to see what sports they’ll love as they age. I already asked my tennis coach how soon Isabella can start practicing! Of course, just as my parents never pressured me into a particular sport, I’ll support them in whatever passion they stumble upon. Besides tennis and the occasional jog, I am relatively stagnant during work. I want to make National Physical Fitness and Sports Month an opportunity to get my steps in and stay active. I can’t force you to do the same, but I’m encouraging you to do it too! When we stay fit, we lower our chances of injury in the future. In my career, countless clients underestimated how fitness can mitigate or prevent injuries. Doctors often recommend injured clients go for short walks or complete physical therapy exercises. These therapeutic activities can help you speed up recovery, and it’s crucial to remain physically active. Just 30 minutes a day of any physical activity can make a difference.

care for our bodies and stay active. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and I want to delve into how crucial sports have been in my life and, hopefully, even inspire you to take your physical fitness to the next level this month.

I would love to one day return to motocross, but with family and work, I can’t afford to

break my collarbone a third time. Now, I try to stay active as best I can with a full schedule and family commitments. One way I do that is by learning how to play tennis! Tennis has become a new favorite pastime and an entertaining way to get my cardio in without being bored out of my mind on a treadmill.

My schedule is so packed these days that I can’t seem to fit in much time for competitive sports.

Sports were an integral part of my everyday life when I was younger. I would spend my neverending free time playing baseball, basketball, and football. On an official team or just in our backyard, it didn’t matter as long as I was with my best friends. Then, I discovered the high-speed thrill of motocross. This competitive sport is much more of a workout than you probably imagine! Physically demanding and utilizing different muscles, motocross was a newfound passion for me in my teenage years. Looking back, I’m shocked that my parents allowed me to practice motocross. They encouraged my new sport of choice and dedicated much of their time toward it. Motocross was a big time commitment,

When work isn’t too hectic, I try to fit in tennis time around two to three times a week. You may remember

that our family recently welcomed our baby girl, Rebecca, so spare time has been sparse! If there’s

No matter your activity levels, you can make a change this

month! Fitness is a vital part of life and your health. Let’s try to reach our wellness goals during National Physical Fitness and Sports Month to keep our bodies strong and pain-free.

no space for tennis on my schedule, I’ll force myself onto a treadmill and keep my mind engaged in an audiobook to prevent boredom.

I wholeheartedly envy those who enjoy running because that will never be me.

HOW TO SPOT FAKE ONLINE INFLUENCERS IS THIS A REAL BRAND?

“Hey! I’m on the promoter team for X business, and we think you are a perfect fit for our ambassador program.” Messages like this and many others are a common tactic that fake brands and scammers use to trick people. Some may think this will only happen to people with large followings, but that’s not always true. Even your child may receive direct messages or comments on photos from scammers who want to take advantage of their naivete.

The first way to determine if an account is fake is if you notice a comment on one of your pictures saying, “Can you DM us?” If a brand wants to work with you or your child, they will reach out to you directly, not the other way around. If a “company” posts a comment, it’s most likely a bot that sent an automated message after it flagged a specific hashtag or word. If you receive a message from someone saying they are from a particular company, be cautious before accepting their proposal. If the company isn’t messaging you from its main account, it’s most likely a scam. An example of these messages was shown at the beginning of this article. Additionally, since this should be a professional business proposal, if the message includes emojis, it’s another sign that the account is probably a bot.

or offers an ambassadorship immediately. This is an easy way for scammers to steal your hard-earned money. If a brand wants you to try their products, ensure that it’s in writing that they will give it to you for free or reimburse you. While it’s exciting that a brand wants to work with you or your child, please research and ensure the company is real before accepting any partnership. Trusting your gut and taking preventive measures will go a long way.

So, how do you spot these fake brands and influencers?

When you first look at the individual and the company’s business social media accounts, everything may seem genuine at first. However, the major difference between fake and real influencers and companies is that fake brands will have unauthentic accounts and bots — meaning their audience isn’t even real.

Furthermore, proceed cautiously if the account asks you to buy their product first

MAKE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY MANDATORY

Bikers also represent a large number of those injured in vehicle accidents. That same year, nearly 82,528 motorcyclists experienced injuries after an accident, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA also revealed that many of those who lost their lives while riding a motorcycle shared some common faults, including the presence of alcohol, not wearing a helmet, or not obtaining a motorcycle license. Tips to Stay Safe You should always have the proper certification to handle a motorcycle. When you receive a motorcycle license, you’re taught mandatory safety regulations and are better equipped to share the road than those without a license. This should go without saying, but we ask that all bikers ride sober and with a proper helmet. If you were to experience an accident, these factors can not only make you at fault but also risk your life. As for drivers, always concentrate on the road and watch for motorcyclists. If you see a biker while driving, note where they are and give them enough space to turn streets or change lanes safely. Bikers have as much right to be on the road as your fellow drivers. If you or someone you love has been involved in a motorcycle collision, our team can help. Call our office at 229-888-0888 for expert guidance on what you should do after experiencing an accident.

Motorcycling is well-known as a risky mode of transportation. While motorcyclists should always follow proper safety laws, so should drivers who share the road with them. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and we want to remind you of the vulnerable position bikers are often in when on the road, and safety tips you should consistently enforce, whether you’re on two wheels or four. Why is motorcycle safety vital? Although motorcycles make up only 3% of registered vehicles on American roads, they also made up 14% of all traffic deaths in 2020. With their smaller size, it can be challenging for drivers to see motorcycles while driving larger vehicles. As a result, accidents are more prone to occur, with the biker receiving most of the damage due to their exposure. 14% may not seem like much to some, but this equates to 5,579 motorcyclists who lost their lives.

YOU’RE GOING TO NEED A LAWYER

CONFIDENTLY PURSUE A TRUCK WRECK CASE

Large trucks were the cause of 4,842 fatal crashes in 2020 according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Meanwhile, 45,900 large trucks were involved in crashes that led to injuries. Car accidents are already stressful and potentially traumatic. When you experience a collision with a commercial truck, the aftermath can be twice as damaging. Fighting for proper compensation after an accident is a struggle, but going against a commercial truck’s large corporation can be incredibly daunting. That’s why you should never pursue your case alone. When you have an experienced personal injury attorney on your side, you’ll have someone who understands all the required legal knowledge to prove your case adequately. If you face them alone, certain obstacles could harm your claim. Confronting Corporations or Insurers Commercial trucking companies or large corporations have legal structures that differ entirely from standard personal injury lawsuits. An attorney can help you identify who exactly is liable for your injuries. It can be the driver, the company, or both, but deciphering who is at fault requires in-depth knowledge and investigation.

We Value You! At the Law Offices of William F. Underwood, III, P.C., the trust we build with our clients is our most valuable asset. To show our appreciation, we would like to thank our clients who have referred others to us since our March newsletter: Commercial Trucks Cause More Damage Victims of a commercial truck collision will likely experience more severe injuries and require longer medical care. Calculating your claim will be more complex, as you’ll need to present your past medical bills and potential future medical costs that your injury will incur. A lawyer can help you calculate these costs and receive sufficient compensation. If you or a loved one have been involved in a commercial truck accident, our compassionate legal team can help. Call our office at 229-888-0888 for personalized guidance on how you can successfully prove your personal injury case. Corporations and insurers often have complicated protocols; without a legal background, you’ll likely be at a loss on what to do. Contact an attorney as soon as possible to know your rights and confidently fight for the justice you deserve. Compiling Evidence Not only can these cases be more complex, but they can also require more evidence on your part. Large companies usually have strict regulations on what evidence is needed to understand who is at fault and how much damage occurred. Your lawyer can help you understand what forms of evidence are required and acquire them on your behalf.

HOST A MURDER MYSTERY DINNER! THE BEST WAY TO CELEBRATE MYSTERY MONTH

Did you know May is Mystery Month? There are dozens of ways to celebrate this enigmatic occasion, from playing Clue to rewatching "Glass Onion" — but why not bring those experiences to life and host your own murder mystery dinner at home? Thanks to a plethora of kits on the market, doing so is easier than ever! What is a murder mystery dinner? A murder mystery dinner is essentially a real-life game of Clue. You invite friends over for dinner and turn your home into the set of “Knives Out” — without the blood, of course. Each of your friends takes on the persona of a character in the story, and when one of them is “murdered,” you compete to uncover who dunnit. Step 1: Pick your kit. Planning a murder mystery dinner from scratch would take the ingenuity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Luckily, you have

several ready-made mysteries to choose from! You can find boxes from Masters of Mystery and My Mystery Party at your local board game store, but you can find many options available online, too. Night of Mystery (NightOfMystery.com), for example, sells both in-person and virtual kits with themes ranging from ‘80s prom to Christmas homicide. If your friends and family don’t like the idea of acting and dressing up, that’s okay — you can still solve a mystery over dinner! Look into kits available through Unsolved Case Files (UnsolvedCaseFiles.com) or Hunt A Killer (Shop.HuntAKiller.com), which involve collaborative mystery-solving without the character work. Step 2: Curate your guest list. Most murder mystery dinners require at least four people, while some include characters

for six, eight, or more! Check the number of players on your kit and invite your most creative, analytical, theatrical, and mystery- loving friends. Step 3: Decorate and plan the menu. If you choose a themed murder mystery, level up your event with a matching menu and decor! For games taking place in England, whip up a shepherd's pie and make a cardboard cutout of Big Ben. For Havana Nights, plan a build-your-own Cubano bar and throw on an Afro-Cuban playlist. You can be as over-the-top as you like. Remember, it’s Mystery Month!
