President’s Message July/August 2025
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” — John F. Kennedy I made a note about this quote several months ago and I feel it really resonates not only with everything that we have been doing with Metro this year, but also with what the federation itself stands for. I know many people who are innately great leaders, and one thing that they all have in common is that they continue their pursuit of learning, looking at how to grow as leaders. This year we have had the privilege of having Bill Asdal give us brief lessons in leadership at our board meetings. We have already covered topics such as Messaging with a purpose and prioritizing your time, and we are looking forward to learning about Managing People & Processes and Delegation & Accountability
with Metrics at our upcoming meetings. This year we have also ramped up our local educational sessions with our “Build a Better Business” and Build a Better Home” series. While these classes aren’t necessarily about leadership per se, we always need to continue to learn so that we can stay on top of trends and know what is going on in the industry in order to better serve our clients and our teams. At the national level, education is offered in all different formats from hour long Shop talks, led by all of the different councils, all the way up to full day classes on a wide variety of topics. At Metro, we have been doing many online lunch and learn classes. The best way to continue to grow and evolve, especially as a leader, is through continued learning. I encourage all of our members to check out these various educational opportunities, both here and National. If you have not had the opportunity yet to be a part of one of Bill‘s presentations, I strongly encourage you to attend our next board meeting. And if you have a topic you would like to learn about (or have a topic that you would love to present to the group) please let us know!
