Mount Tom Academy: Holyoke Community College
The Mount Tom Academy program, administered by the Collaborative for Educational Services at Holyoke Community College, works with students who have struggled in a more traditional school setting, and are at risk of dropping out of school. The program is designed specifically to serve students who have been unsuccessful in traditional high school settings and may benefit from alternative placement. Students placed at the program will eventually return to their sending schools, or finish their high school work at Mount Tom Academy and then graduate from their sending school. Located at Holyoke Community College, students benefit from a one room classroom model, with personalized programs offering an open, diverse environment that challenges students while providing a high level of support. Employing self - directed learning methods that engage reluctant learners in their own educational process, Mount Tom removes students’ objections to studying and learning, and promotes achievement among students who would otherwise be likely to drop out of school. The Mount Tom Academy program provides: an alternative pathway to a high school diploma for disconnected youth trauma - informed instruction personalized instruction designed to maximize academic achievement social emotional learning support for those experiencing mental health and behavioral health challenges evidence - based instructional approaches in a small setting with frequent one - on - one support opportunities to succeed in advanced courses and dual enrollment blended learning instruction in standards aligned courses opportunity for academically strong students who struggle with self - motivation and personal accountability Mount Tom Academy provides a safe, flexible environment for learning and has meant the difference between success and high school failure for more than 125 young men and women from 15 area high schools.

American Foundation For Suicide Prevention
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health through education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide. Through programs like More Than Sad, Signs Matter: Early Detection, and our Model School Policy, we teach schools and communities how to prevent suicide. AFSP programs and trainings teach teens to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others, teach parents how to initiate a conversation about mental health with their child, and give educators and school administrators comprehensive ways to implement suicide prevention policies in their local community. We also strive to challenge the stigma surrounding depression, and demystify the treatment process. Suicide is the 3 rd leading cause of death of children 10 - 14 years old in Massachusetts and it is preventable - Learn the Signs. Save a life. Find out more about these programs available to you, your schools, and your community at www.afsp.org or contact the Western Mass AFSP Area Director Heather White at hwhite@afsp.org

LightHouse Holyoke
LightHouse Holyoke is an education program for teens ages 13 - 18 who are looking for a personalized school experience. LightHouse offers students the oppor- tunity to discover and pursue their passions, and to develop the skills they will need as they move forward into the 21st century. We change the teacher - student rela- tionship entirely to create a truly collaborative process founded in trust and mutual respect. Our program is founded on a few simple, yet radical understandings: • Everyone wants to succeed. • No single environment is ideal for all learners. • People of all ages deserve respect and autonomy. • New ways of thinking and being in the world demand new educational strategies. Education at LightHouse is entirely personalized. Each student’s curriculum consists of a mix of LightHouse classes, tutorials, and independent work, and can also include college classes, online classes, internships, volunteer work, and/or paid work. LightHouse is small—only 45 students—so that staff and students can build real relationships and create individual learning plans that are completely personal- ized.
