2021 Annual Report (Callanwolde Fine Arts Center)

Proud to share the Callanwolde Fine Art Center's 2021 Annual Report.

2021 Annual Report

Thanks to dedicated Board members, instructors, volunteers, students, and staff, Callanwolde experienced tremendous success in 2021. Callanwolde’s definition of success, however, goes well beyond strong financial stability. We exist to serve the greater Atlanta community as an inspiring home for the arts: specifically, offering arts education to underserved communities, hosting live performances, ensuring the highest quality of arts instruction, and preserving the Callanwolde estate. We started the year determined to make the best of a challenging situation. With many of Atlanta’s music venues still closed due to the pandemic, we capitalized on our beautiful outdoor amphitheater by adding a Spring Concert Series (in addition to our extremely popular Jazz on the Lawn concerts) with four new performances. Investments in a new tent to cover the entire stage and better sound technology contributed to nine consecutive “sell-out” concerts. Callanwolde expanded support of underserved communities by taking advantage of our seven buildings and the large upper parking lot tent we purchased in 2020. Access to classes during these trying times was—as we have been told more than once—literally lifesaving. Increased isolation caused by the pandemic hit our veterans who live with PTSD particularly hard. Feedback proved that our classes provided a creative outlet critical to their wellbeing. Our partnerships with Trellis and the Shepherd Center also flourished. Our newly expanded Ability Garden continued to host more and more students who require wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries and neuromuscular diseases. “Art in Nature” was also introduced and became a new favorite of the Stroke Recovery Group. 2021 Creative Camps and Teen Summer Studios received the best parent reviews in our history. For many of the youngest students, Creative Camp was their first- ever experience in a non-virtual classroom setting. Increased financial aid helped diversify our camps to levels we have never experienced before. Some of the practices that we employed because of the pandemic made our classes more personal and enjoyable, and will stay in place.

On the day after Thanksgiving, we kicked off a new interactive holiday event called “Winter House.” Guests had free access to the beautifully decorated mansion with options to experience some of our most popular classes like throwing pottery on the wheel, raku firing, and blacksmithing. Seasonal workshops like gingerbread house and wreath-making were also offered. “Photos with Santa” (including pets!) helped fill the house with children who also had access to Callanwolde coloring books, old fashion board games, hot chocolate, and s’mores toasted over one our many outdoor firepits. In the evenings we offered live performances, including a partnership between the Callanwolde School of Dance and the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir. Our annual Artist Market, featuring work from Callanwolde students and instructors, broke all previous sales records. Perhaps our greatest long-term achievement was the Board approval of a new mission statement—putting a stronger focus on supporting underserved communities in Atlanta. Thanks to loyal supporters who were encouraged by our updated mission statement and a rekindling of our relationship with Coca-Cola, Callanwolde’s annual Holiday Gala netted more than twice the funds raised in 2019, contributing to our strong financial position. The year ended on a high note, literarily, as DeKalb County began the herculean task of replacing and restoring the entire roof of the Mansion. Every tile was removed allowing the 100-year-old sheathing to be replaced. In addition, the Courtyard received a new roof, HVAC units and ceiling tiles. Contractors estimate that the new roof will last another 100 years. Work will be completed by March 2022. With the tremendous support of the community, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is poised to emerge from the pandemic better prepared than ever to fulfill our mission.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Callanwolde is a unique arts center that enriches the lives of metropolitan Atlantans year round. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is now operated and restored by the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. Achievements of 2021

Holiday Gala Breaks Fundraising Record Over 140 faithful Callanwolde supporters helped raise a record $134,000 net at our 2021 Holiday Gala. Our friends from Coca-Cola were in attendance and pushed us over the top with a donation of $25,000. Proceeds provide financial aid for students, veterans living with PTSD, and restoration of our historic buildings. Financial Aid Support More Than Doubled vs. 2020 295 students benefiting from financial aid were able to attend 196 classes in 2021. At a total expenditure of $52,117, aid more than doubled from 2020. Spring Concert Series and Jazz on the Lawn Sold Out Thanks to our very clever “pod” seating system keeping guests socially distanced, Callanwolde continued to hold concerts uninterrupted throughout 2020 and 2021. The newly introduced Spring Concert Series and 22nd year of Jazz on the Lawn concerts all sold out. Pottery Program More Popular Than Ever Even with the addition of 11 more potter’s wheels, two kilns, and two studio spaces, Callanwolde’s pottery classes remained incredibly popular, with classes selling out in minutes. Blacksmithing Classes Introduced Callanwolde added blacksmithing to its metal smithing program and classes immediately filled up. We now are the proud owners of four new anvils and forges. Winter House Introduced Callanwolde’s first annual “Winter House” event welcomed thousands of guests from all over the country who enjoyed everything from decorating gingerbread houses to dance performances to a visit with Santa. Guests also had an opportunity to attend workshops in our most popular classes like Throwing on the Wheel and Blacksmithing. Winter House Artist Market Breaks Sales Record “Winter House” hosted our most successful Artist Market ever, with over $20,000 in sales. Over 45 Callanwolde instructors and students participated.

Visual Arts Education Callanwolde art classes returned safely to in-person learning, while still making virtual options accessible to students. Each quarter Callanwolde offers a variety of pottery, drawing, painting, jewelry and metalsmithing, darkroom photography, blacksmithing, and writing classes. Through the challenges of the pandemic, Callanwolde programming was able to expand course offerings. Most notable was the addition of Blacksmithing courses and a functioning Blacksmithing studio.

Callanwolde’s inspiring beauty and services to the community are not to be taken for granted. Left unattended, our seven buildings, amphitheater, working greenhouse and 12-acres of gardens, can quickly fall into disrepair. Our concerts and events are attended by thousands of people. Events and Entertainment

The pandemic created a unique challenge to provide the community with much needed arts entertainment while maintaining the safety of our guests. Callanwolde took full advantage of its one-acre outdoor Amphitheater and 27,000 sq. ft. Mansion to spread guests out in pod seating when appropriate. Callanwolde was one of the few outdoor live music venues available in Atlanta during the Covid pandemic, providing a refuge to support musicians who wanted to perform and safe space for the community to come out and enjoy music. SPRING CONCERT SERIES Callanwolde introduced a new outdoor Spring Concert Series on Friday evenings in March and April 2021. The sold out concerts took place in Callanwolde’s outdoor Amphitheater and featured an array of musicians including Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics, Michelle Malone, Victor Wainwright, and Seth Walker. JAZZ ON THE LAWN Celebrating its 22nd year, the popular Jazz on the Lawn concert series took place in Callanwolde’s outdoor Amphitheater on five Friday evenings August through October 2021. The sold out performances featured some of Atlanta’s best known jazz performers including Eddie and Mayi Lopez & Orquesta MaCuba, Joey Somerville, Karla Harris, Joe Alterman, and Joe Gransden with Robin Latimore. Many thanks to our Jazz on the Lawn sponsors: Ameris Bank, Holland & Knight, and JAZZ WCLK 91.9.

2021 Faculty Exhibition Composed of 16 Callanwolde artists and instructors in Painting, Mixed Media, Pottery, and Ceramics, the show seeks to highlight the great artistic accomplishments of some of our brilliant creators. "Freedom Isn’t Free" by Jerushia Graham Graham is a highly skilled artist and arts educator (she’s even taught at Callanwolde!) whose work demonstrates her keen eye for symbolic color theory, narratives of human introspection, and contemplations of race and privilege. This show, which included Graham’s American Flag series, “From Where I Stand” prints, and more, sought to evoke feelings of compassion and curiosity in viewers as the lives and legacies of Enslaved Africans and People of Color in America are examined and shared.

Winter House 2021

From November 26 through December 11, 2021, Callanwolde was open to the public celebrating a new type of holiday tradition, one filled with art and holiday cheer. Friends sat by the fires in our Wine Bar and Beer Garden, while families gathered by the outdoor fire pits and made s’mores. Jazzy holiday sounds filled the air while folks shopped at our holiday artist market, played board games, and learned how to decorate gingerbread houses. Other mini-workshops featured Callanwolde’s most popular year round classes including Throwing Pottery on the Wheel, Raku Firing, Jewelry Making, Glass Etching, and Blacksmithing. Santa made appearances and took photos with furry friends and families. The event also featured live performances from Joe Gransden, Joe Alterman, and Robin Latimore, and dancers from Kit Modus and Callanwolde performed their holiday shows, including Our Common Joy featuring the Ebenezer Gospel Choir. Many thanks to our amazing Winter House sponsors: Ansley Real Estate Molly Carter Gaines, Atlanta Party Rentals, Cynthia Baer, Your Neighborhood Realtor, Classic Entry Systems, Inc., Faith Flowers, Georgia Power Foundation, and Tradition Trees

TESTIMONIAL FROM ATTENDEES

“Great holiday experience! They have a classy library bar, snacks, and my favorite, the s'mores kit! The house is decorated very well for the season, and there are local artists showing their pieces on display upstairs, where you can talk to some of the teachers of their classes, and even paint an ornament or mug. Worth a stop!" "Winter house is a terrific experience, so glad they did it this year and a wonderful way to experience all that Callanwolde had to offer. Our community is certainly made better by this gem. Instructor John has an encyclopedic range of knowledge on all things pottery."

2021 Callanwolde Volunteer of the Year Dave Gutman

When Dave moved to Atlanta from Austin Texas in 2018, he started taking pottery classes at Callanwolde and volunteered in the Callanwolde gardens. Because he was so knowledgeable about plants, Dave was asked to take over the Callanwolde greenhouse and became the manager, a position he still holds today. In exchange for his volunteer work as greenhouse manager, Dave works on his pottery at Callanwolde every week. “My pottery helps me express my creativity, love for nature and the desire to push the limits of convention and color. Each piece is an individual statement. Every project offers me a challenge to create unique art demonstrating appreciation of color, texture and function.” Dave was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up surrounded by succulent plants and developed an appreciation for plant and animal life indigenous to the area. He and his wife explored Southern Africa for almost a year, living in a tent and photographing the wildlife and natural beauty. In 2000, Dave and his wife moved to Austin, TX, where he first started pottery. He enjoys producing unique decorative and functional art including planters, vases, serving ware, urns and funky art for home and garden. In 2018, Dave and his wife moved to Atlanta to be closer to the grandsons. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is continually grateful for Dave and every one of his contributions.
