Segment A: IH-35W to Riverside Drive Figure 14. Proposed Cross-Section
Existing
Proposed
Four, 12-foot vehicular travel lanes, a bi-directional center turn-lane, and a posted speed limit of 30 mph.
Four, 11-foot travel lanes divided by a landscaped median with a left turn lane and a 30-mph posted speed limit. A 6-foot buffer for transit shelters, benches, and pedestrian scale lighting and a 10-foot sidepath for walking, bicycling and other micro mobility options. z The proposed cross-section can be accommodated within the existing right-of-way (100’). z The 5-foot frontage zone allows for room within the public right-of-way for utilities to be buried. z A planted median is proposed at this location in direct response to an identified pattern of crashes discussed in the Safety section of this chapter and will improve the potential pedestrian crossings. z The proposed median can be designed to include landscaping and vehicular lighting.
Vehicular Realm
A 5-foot sidewalk that is generally separated from the travelway and is inconsistently present along the corridor. z Greatest volume of crashes on the corridor with two fatal crashes. In addition, IH-35W to Riverside Drive has the largest number of pedestrian related crashes due to pedestrians crossing mid-block between the commercial destinations. z There are strong connections between the transit stops and commercial development along the IH-35W corridor. This connection needs improved pedestrian facilities to increase safety. z The average annual traffic volumes are 22,272 vehicles per day which is the highest along the corridor.
