A fashion phenomenon. British model Jean Shrimpton’s much anticipated appearance at Flemington on Derby 1965 left many racegoers and commentators aghast. A STORY FROM THE VAULT
DO THREE DERBY WINS AND AN OAKS MAKE A CHAMPION?
By Andrew Lemon
One hundred and fifty years ago, in 1870, the bay filly Florence won the Oaks at Flemington. She holds a unique record, never equalled. Florence is one of only eight fillies who have won the VRC Oaks in the same season as winning the Victoria Derby against the colts. Of these, she is the only one ever to have also won the AJC, or Australian, Derby in Sydney. She went on to win the 1871 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm. Yet the question has been asked: was Florence really a champion? What does a filly have to do to prove her quality? Who did she beat, they sometimes ask? But it is an old saying in racing – as Winx can attest – that you can only beat who turns up on the day. Like Winx, Florence often scared off her opposition. Her Oaks win at Flemington ended up a two-horse race. She won as she pleased. Her breeding was fashionable, sired by Boiardo at Thomas Austin’s Barwon Park. Her dam Rose of Denmark was in the record books with third placings in the 1863 and 1864 Melbourne Cups. At two years, Florence won the AJC Champagne Stakes. At three, in the spring of 1870, she imperiously won the AJC Derby at Randwick against a good field before coming to Melbourne. That year the Victoria Derby opened the spring carnival on Saturday, with the Melbourne Cup following on Thursday and the Oaks on Friday. And that Derby turned out to be the most extraordinary Victoria Derby ever.
8
That’s because the owner-trainer John Tait entered two runners – Florence and the colt Pyrrhus – and this time he wanted the colt to win. Tait was the most successful racing man in Australia. He’d already won the 1866 and 1868 Melbourne Cups with The Barb and Glencoe. He raced Fireworks, the triple Derby winner of 1867/68. Impossible to countenance today, in that era an owner with two runners in a race could “declare” in the betting
PORTRAIT OF JOHN TAIT
ring which of his horses he wanted to win. Today, horses must run on their merits. Florence had the superior form, but Tait declared for Pyrrhus. In the running, both Florence and her jockey, Charlie Stanley, had other ideas. Some reports said that Stanley tried to slow Florence in the home straight, urging Pyrrhus to pass. Others suggest that he let Florence bolt. Either way she won comfortably. Who was the villain? Tait for not wanting his best horse to win, or Stanley for not following his trainer’s instructions? Opinions differed. Tait sacked Stanley, whose riding career soon ended. Stanley later boasted that he never wilfully lost a race. Tait went on to win two more Melbourne Cups. Who was the heroine? Florence, of course. For her Queensland Derby, she frightened away all but one of her competitors. She led throughout and won in a canter by several lengths, just as she did at Flemington. She is an Oaks legend. You can only beat who turns up on the day.

KOKO POPPING CANDY’S SECOND CAREER
When many thoroughbred racehorses retire, they are still in their prime. Seen as too old for the track, they are often the right age and in ideal physical condition to transition from the racetrack to the equestrian world. “If a horse is still racing at six, they are seen as long in the tooth but that is young for an equestrian horse,” said Amanda Ross, one of Australia’s leading equestrian riders. Dear Australia, Thank you,
for taking a race for a fabled golden watch and turning it into an event that stops time. Ours is a tradition made by many, and made great by a great many more. Together, we have made memories weaved with magic. We’ve watched you fall in love on our front lawn. You’ve set trends, as we’ve set records and we both have broken them, time and time again. Thank you for your deafening cheers and unbowing enthusiasm; rain, hail or shine.
Together we have captivated a nation and shaped it. To make history it takes more than the operation of time, it takes care, imagination, devotion from each one of a cast of thousands. It’s only the greatest cast that makes this the greatest show. So, for your devotion we give you ours.
