give up. But the old man persuaded him to stay on because without his help he’d have to quit too. So Mark stayed on a while longer and that did the trick. For not too long after that, it happened. Gold! They found gold! And it was a rich vein. At last both he and the old man would be rich. And as it turned out, Mark became a lot richer than he even dared hope as a result of that mine. The old man didn’t live long to enjoy his gold. After his death all the mine be longed to Mark. Now he could go back to New England. Now he could help his old parents if he could find them. They wouldn’t have to work any more or go hungry and without the things they needed or wanted. But Mark was not that kind of a man. Just because he had a gold mine, just one, didn’t mean he was quitting his search and fight for more wealth. No sir! He may not have realized it but he was selfish and greedy, very greedy. All that the gold he now had did for him was to make him want more, more of what gold could buy. He got tired of mining and so he decided to go farther West and deal in land and cattle. He’d go into the ranching business. Not by buying a ranch and going at it like a man of honesty would do. Not Mark. He was going to open a bank in some opportune place. There he would lend money to ranchers and cattlemen. Then when they couldn’t pay him back he would get their property. And this he succeeded in doing. He even started a town and named it Grey- berville. Naturally most of it be longed to him. He was the big boss and had no mercy on anyone. He only had one line of purpose and that was to get all he could. He got to be known as Mr. “ Grabber” and the town “ Grabberville.” By the time he was 50 years old, he was head of his own kingdom known as the Crooked River Land and Cattle Co. He owned more land and more cattle than anyone in the country. He had a wife and two sons. They lived on a beautiful ranch, the Home Ranch, a few miles out of town.
