The Dulwich Despatch Summer 2023

THE Dulwich Despatch Summer 2023

The role of education and upskilling is important in preparing workers for the future. The ultimate goal of upskilling is to create a more effective worker and stay competitive in your industry. The reason upskilling is so important is because the skills required in jobs are changing fast. ‘ Jobs are changing on you, even if you ’ re not changing jobs. ’ Data shows skillsets for jobs have changed by around 25% since 2015. By 2027, this number is expected to double. Another big part of upskilling is recognising trends in your sector. Think about someone who works in oil, gas or other fossil fuels—it would make sense for them to learn more about green energy or electric vehicles. In

marketing or media, that might mean spending more time on TikTok to figure out how the app works and how trends are emerging. For performers, it might mean noting the upsurge in demand for voice actors and trying to gain some relevant experience. AI is definitely going to make a big impact on the jobs sector, but it seems like it will be a good one, making more jobs for more people. A new variety of skills is going to be needed for the new world, but there will be time to adapt. Overall, I believe that the introduction of AI and automation in jobs will make a change for the better.

The Carnegie Quiz

The trip to JAGS for the Carnegie Library Quiz was fun and we did well, writes Jake Thurgood (Y7). Team Apocalypse, with me and Will Kwok and two students from JAGS and Alleyns, started off strong in second place following Team Light with Will Beresford in first place. Our position in the quiz varied because of the different teams pulling in and out of the lead. After that we kept a steady pace in second place and were quite surprised when we were announced the winners! The entire thing went smoothy, and despite the sweltering heat all teams did well. The snacks were good, (muffins, popcorn, juice and sweets!) and kept us going through the afternoon. At the end, the prize for first place was a choice for each member of the winning team between a copy of the books October October or The Light in Everything . We also got a book token. Everyone also got wildflower seed balls (which Jenson planted on the way back to the College, next to the Dulwich Picture Gallery).

By the end of it we were quite tired, and I had a lot of fun there. Hopefully we will do it again next year!
