THE Dulwich Despatch Summer 2023
Ukraine - One Year On It has been one year since Putin invaded Ukraine, remarks Jenson Leung (Y7) One year of Russia raining down tyranny and chaos against the people of Ukraine. It has been years since the last war in Europe, or should I say ‘ Special Military Operation ’ in Putin ’ s words. At the very start a humanitarian crisis was inevitable, with people trying to flee Putin ’ s deliberate attacks on civilians, while violating acts and laws designed to protect humans against these atrocities. Western nations responded to the cries for help from the Ukrainian Government. Javelin missiles were sent to Ukraine by the U.K. HIMARS sent by the U.S.A Helmets sent by Germany. Sanctions were imposed by a world trying to shut Russia down, from McDonald ’ s being closed, to Nike and Coca Cola leaving the country as a form of protest. Russia and Putin got the fame they were hoping for. However, Ukraine fought back. Bit by bit from their capital, crimes against humanity committed by Russia and Wagner troops were uncovered. In September they took back land illegally proclaimed by Russia as theirs. The annexation was only recognized by Russia and a handful of other countries. Ukraine has dealt devastating blows to Russia. Putin is now wanted by the ICC in The Hague. He kidnapped children from their Ukrainian families and tried to paint an image of peace and how he was ‘ saving Ukraine from the Nazis ’. However, he was just demonstrating how delusional he is. Anti - War protests in Russia got shut down, calling the war a ‘ war ’ being illegal. In spite of the terroristic attacks, Ukraine remained strong. With aid being sent to help their fight back against the dictatorship Russia is losing; however, they will not admit it. With more aid we could proclaim Russia as losers. A word Ukrainians and the world have wanted to say since the 24th February 2022. Echo Eternal Toby Kuzi-Orizu (Y7) reflects on a creative response to remember the Holocaust At the start of the Lent term, year 7 had their first off - schedule day in the lead up to Holocaust memorial day. During the day, we heard from several members of the Echo Eternal trust. Echo Eternal is a trust that tries to listen to and document the testimonies of as many Holocaust survivors as possible. Their goal is to make sure everyone is aware of what happened during
those dark times and that the echoes of the survivors will be heard eternally. The day started with us gathering at the Edward Alleyn Theatre (EAT) and meeting some members of Echo Eternal. They spoke to us about the Holocaust and genocides in general. They want to preserve the memories of the Holocaust so that genocides like it do not happen ever again. After this talk, we were split up into groups focusing on art, music and drama. In the digital art room we used different fonts to write the names of Holocaust survivors. Then, we printed out the names, cut them out and went back to our art room. Once we were there, we practised using a tool to engrave the names into a mirror. These were combined to make a mobile sculpture.
