Noah Shapton (Y8) delves deep into the daily life of Director of Estates, Jim Hudson
What does Director of Estates mean? The ‘ Estate ’ refers to all Dulwich College buildings, grounds and equipment, and the people who manage and maintain them. It ’ s my job to look after the Estate. Did you do other jobs before you started this one? I ran a technical event company for many years and, prior to that, worked as a project manager, a stage designer, an English teacher and, a very long time ago, a diving instructor.
What is the most interesting part of your job? Understanding how everything affects everything else.
What is the part of your job that is the most difficult? Understanding how everything affects everything else.
Can you describe a typical day? I get up, I play with my kids, I look after Dulwich College, I play with my kids, I go to bed.
What did you want to do when you were at school? To be an engineering designer.
Do you prefer it when there are no pupils on site? What a good question. Honestly, it ’ s busier during holidays and more complicated during term - time.
Who is your favourite colleague? My boss.
If you could do any job at the College what would it be? Today, mine. What is your favourite book? Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Tell us a Joke . Two atoms are walking down the street and one stops and says to the other, “ I ’ ve lost an electron ”. The other says, ” You sure? ”. The first says, “ I ’ m positive ”. Tell us a secret about Dulwich College. So many … my initials are on the gold weather vane, on the top of the Lantern, on the top of the Centre Block.
