THE Dulwich Despatch Summer 2023
Thinking Ahead
Now that Year 7 is finally coming to a close, writes Mark Gill (Y7) it’s time to look at the year ahead.
One thing I am looking forward to is more freedom with our choice of second language. We have a choice of dropping Latin, Chinese, or dropping both and doing German. This gives us more choice on our future, and more responsibilities, making us more independent. Another thing I am looking forward to is being able to choose sports. Personally, as I am not a massive fan of cricket, this will be a welcome change. We can choose hockey instead of football, and athletics instead of cricket. However, there are some things that I am not exactly looking forward to. One of these are the much harder and higher stake Year 8 exams. These exams are much more important than the ones in Year 7, which means that we will have to revise and study much more for the exams, which is very annoying, especially as it means that we will miss out on doing anything or going anywhere during the May holidays. Another thing I am not really looking forward to is harder work in class. This will make it difficult for some people who are already struggling or finding work difficult this year, as they will struggle even more with harder work.
Overall, I believe that Year 8 will bring welcome changes and more responsibilities, even if in some cases these responsibilities may make our lives a bit harder.
National Reading Champions Quiz
In February two teams from Dulwich competed in a reading quiz, writes
Sean Kitchlu-Connolly (Y7) We had never done it before, so we didn ’ t know what to expect
but we weren't disappointed. It was made of eight rounds, each with ten questions. At first this doesn ’ t sound like too many questions but altogether it comes to a whopping eighty questions! Each round had a different theme varying from topics such as magical books and sci - fi. Both teams did very well, and the ending results were very close. Every single school managed to put up an impressive performance. The separation between one of our teams and first was only seven points!
