A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
On Monday, the Year 12 Drama students performed their practical piece for their A Level exam. It was such a terrific performance by all of them. I wish them all the best with regards to the outcome of their performance. On Wednesday, our Year 12 German students departed for a 4-day visit to Berlin. They have a really busy itinerary exploring different museums and other attractions in the German capital. I am sure they are all still having a fantastic time and are also getting plenty of language practice with the locals. Over the course of next week, Year 12 students will once again be involved in a number of events. As part of the French picnic that the Year 8 students will take part in, a small number of Year 12 French students will participate in it too. This will give them yet another chance to converse and practice their French. Next Thursday, the Year 12 History student will attend an in-person workshop on the Tudor rebellions. This workshop considers the extent to which rebellion threatened England from 1536-1569. The rebellions examined include Pilgrimage of Grace, Kett’s rebellion, Western Prayer Book, Wyatts and Northern Earls. The students will be encouraged to generate criteria about what would make an uprising a threat, using evidence from original documents to support their judgements. The two-hour workshop will be led by an experienced history educator in an inspiring learning space at The National Archives in Kew. The students will handle a range of original Tudor documents from letters to proclamations housed in the State Papers. These include handwritten by advisors like William Cecil and signed by Tudor monarchs. The workshop will also include a showcase of spectacular Tudor plea rolls. Also on Thursday after school, we are having a talk which is aimed at the students who are thinking of reading a Science-related course at University and are thinking of a career in Science. It will take place in the Sixth Form study base after school. The speaker, Ms Leung, who is an ex-Waldegrave student, is currently a Bioinformatics PhD Student at UCL Cancer Institute. She is researching non-small cell lung cancer evolution in the context of non-genetic processes that generate phenotypic diversity. This talk will be an informal, discussion-style talk where Ms Leung will share her experiences and there will be lots of opportunities for the students to ask about studying science at university and where it can take them beyond this. Finally, next Friday, our annual sports day will take place. As a result, there will be alterations to the timing of the school day and that further details will be shared with students in due course Have a good weekend!
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH
