Hot Off the Grill THE PERFECT SUMMER EVENING

“During the summer, we’re out there grilling at least four times a week, as long as the weather cooperates.”

Nothing says summer like dinner hot off the grill. As soon as the weather starts to get nice again, Stacey and I love to break out the grill and start cooking. Cooking outside and smelling your meal sizzling on the grill makes it easy to work up a big appetite. We do burgers, brats, steak, or chicken. Whatever we have, it usually comes with a side of sliced and diced potatoes. These could be regular potatoes or even sweet potatoes, depending on what we’re in the mood for. No matter what we serve up, it’s sure to come with a serving of vegetables. I’ve never cared much for vegetables, a stance I’m sure most people can relate to. However, in the last few years, I’ve realized that my mom was right: I really do need to eat my vegetables. In the last few years, I’ve started educating myself more and more about nutrition. It doesn’t seem like medical doctors talk to you too much about nutrition. They tell us to exercise and eat right, but they rarely go into how the right foods help you stay healthy and live longer. In addition to having healthy vitamins and nutrients, the dietary fiber from vegetables can help reduce cholesterol and even lower your risk of heart disease. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to be hanging out with my wife and playing ball with our dog for a long time. If that means eating more green beans and peas, then so be it.

favorites are carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. We both eat vegetables with almost every meal, including meals off the grill.

There are a variety of ways to prepare your vegetables. You can steam them on the stove or in the microwave, roast them in the oven, or wrap them in tin foil and grill them.

The real trick is not going overboard with the butter. If you add too much butter, then it basically defeats the purpose of eating vegetables. This is why we usually eat our vegetables plain. I know some folks who swear by certain seasonings, by why overcomplicate things? Even when cooked, I still don’t think vegetables are the tastiest of foods, but I know eating themwill do my body good. During the summer, we’re out there grilling at least four times a week, as long as the weather cooperates. When the weather is nice, it means I’m also going outside more to play with my dog. It’s a lot more fun to be outside when the grass is green and the ground isn’t muddy. I’m looking forward to playing ball with Sam more while we’re outside grilling. That’s my idea of a perfect summer evening.

Stacey and I have become pretty big vegetable eaters because vegetables are key to keeping us healthy. My

Border Collie Corner SEE YOU AT THE DAVE WRIGHT FAMILY DOG PARK!

Hello, everybody!

It’s summertime! Longer days and nice weather mean plenty of time to play outside. I love playing ball in my backyard, but I’m looking forward to playing in our local parks. I’m especially excited to visit Hiawatha’s brand-new dog park! The Dave Wright Family Dog Park is the very first dog park in Hiawatha. After years of planning, the park finally came to be thanks to the collaboration between the city, Linn County, and Dave Wright Auto. Located south of Boyson Road along Cedar Valley Nature Trail, the park is nearly 2 acres long and will feature separate areas for large dogs and small dogs, so dogs of all sizes can play safely.

The Best Ways to Help Local Nonprofits in Challenging Times Over the past several months, families, businesses, and nonprofits have had to navigate life in this challenging “new normal,” and it can be hard to support your favorite nonprofits when times are tough. Here are a few ways you can help these important entities, even when you don’t have resources to spare right now. Donate While many people donate generously during the holiday season, remember that nonprofits need donations throughout the year, and different nonprofits need different things. A monetary donation can often go a long way, but never feel obligated to give money, especially when your budget may be tight. Instead, consider cleaning out your closet. What clothes, shoes, or other accessories can you part with? What about dishware or small appliances? When you clean out your home and donate unused items, you benefit those in the community who need them most. Volunteer In a time of social distancing, volunteering may be discouraged, but nonprofits still need volunteers to operate. The good news is that many nonprofits need volunteers for positions that maintain social distance, such as driving. Food banks and kitchens need drivers to pick up donations or ingredients from donors and to deliver food to people in need, such as the elderly or those with disabilities. Advocate Even if you don’t have time or resources to give, you can become an advocate for important causes around your community. While it might not seem like much, sharing information about local nonprofits on social media can make a genuine difference. Nonprofits need exposure, which is greatly boosted through community support. Sharing useful information about nonprofits — or sharing their posts — increases their visibility so more people will take action.

Everyone at Petersen Pet Hospital is excited about this new park. The hospital even donated two new benches for human guests at

the park to take a rest after playing with their dogs. Each section of the park will also have a few agility features that I’m really excited about.

I’ve been working on my agility training, and I can’t wait to show off for my friends at the park!

‘Hot Dog’ Dog Biscuits Fido shouldn’t eat scraps from the grill, but he can still enjoy a classic summertime snack!

Petersen Pet Hospital Now Offers Telemedicine

Telemedicine has been very popular in the human medical field the past few years, and now veterinary hospitals are able to offer it to their clients as well. We have partnered with a company called Airvet. They have an app that can be downloaded onto a smartphone in which the client can contact a veterinarian. The app will help improve our ability to care for our clients and patients and potentially save our clients money.

There are three ways in which the app can be utilized by the client.

If you and your dog are planning a visit, then remember that dogs need to be up to date on their vaccinations in order to use the park. Dog owners will also need to keep the vaccination records on them while visiting the park. If you need a copy of your dog’s vaccination records or want to make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, then give Petersen Pet Hospital a call. We want to help everyone enjoy this wonderful new park. The park is expected to open midsummer. You can find updates about the dog park at Hiawatha-Iowa.com/news. I hope to see you at the Dave Wright Family Dog Park this summer! —Sam

The first way is that the client can use it during curbside appointments for their pets. How this works is the client requests a curbside service with the veterinarian that will be examining their pet via the app prior to arriving to the hospital. The client and veterinarian will then be able to video chat with each other during the appointment and the client can watch the examination be completed. The second way is that the client can request to discuss a non-urgent issue about their pet with a veterinarian during normal office hours via the app. This will save the clients and veterinarians time by directing the issue right to a veterinarian rather than calling the office and discussing it with a client care specialist, who then relays the message to a veterinarian. The third way is that the client can discuss a possible emergency issue about their pet with one of our veterinarians or another veterinarian within the U.S. when the hospital is closed. This is very helpful in situations where a client isn’t sure if their pet truly needs to be examined as an emergency. By being able to talk with a veterinarian prior to taking their pet to the 24-hour emergency hospital, it can potentially save the client hundreds of dollars if the pet could wait to be examined the next day by us rather than taking the pet to the emergency appointment.

INGREDIENTS

• •

1/2 cup flour

• •

1/4 cup water

2 tsp powdered Parmesan cheese 2 tbsp natural, xylitol-free peanut butter

Beef stick dog treats

It costs the client $30 to use the app but is free for all curbside service appointments.

Download it today and get signed up now.

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In large bowl, combine flour and Parmesan cheese, then add peanut butter and water. Mix until mixture thickens and forms a dough. 3. Sprinkle flour on your workstation and roll out dough to form a long, 1-inch-thick cylinder. Cut dough into 3-inch pieces. Use the round handle of a wooden spoon to make a crease down the middle lengthwise of each dough piece, forming a hot dog bun shape. 4. Place “buns” on a nonstick baking pan. Cook in the oven for 7–10 minutes, or until hard. 5. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Cut beef sticks into 3-inch pieces. Place beef sticks into buns to create “hot dogs.” 6. Share with your dog during your next cookout!

Super Beagles and Jumping Llamas

GuinnessWorld Records’Most Amazing Animals

Hearing about someone who has claimed a Guinness World Record is pretty cool, but do you know what’s even cooler? When animals make world records. Here are a few amazing animals who hold some really cool records. Caspa, the Amazing Jumping Llama Sue Williams is an animal trainer and behaviorist who specializes in dogs. One day, she was working on agility training with her dogs when she noticed her llama, Caspa, watching them. After a little time and training, Williams discovered that Caspa loved jumping, too. In 2015, Caspa cleared a bar set at 3 feet, 8 1/2 inches. He jumped right into the world record for “highest bar jump cleared by a llama.”

time and patience and that he was so proud of his clever cat.

Purin, the Beagle Who Holds 3 Guinness World Records

Nicknamed “The Super Beagle,” Purin scored her first title in 2015

for her amazing goalkeeping skills. The beagle “saved” 14 mini soccer balls thrown by her human, Makoto Kumagai, in one minute. A

“He’s a complete diva,” says Williams. “So, if there are people there to show off in front of, that’s when he’s at his ultimate best.”

year later, Purin claimed another record when she became the “fastest dog on a ball” by traveling 10 meters in 10.39 seconds while balancing on a ball. Not long after, Purin and Kumagai set the record for “most skips by a dog and a person in one minute — single rope”with 58 skips. Talk about super!

Didga, a Very Tricky Kitty Anyone who says cats can’t learn tricks hasn’t met Didga. In 2016, Didga, with help from her human, Robert Dollwet, claimed a world record by performing 20 different tricks in 60 seconds. Her routine started with the classics, like sitting and giving high-fives, and culminated in riding a skateboard while hopping over a low bar. Dollwet told Guinness World Records that training Didga took a lot of
