A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

On Wednesday we had more high energy as we sent a team of 42 students off to the 2025 London Borough Schools Athletics Champion- ships and waved Auf Wiedersen to our Year 12 German students who are exploring Berlin until tomorrow. Well done to all our athletes, we brought home a few medals! You can read a full write up in our Sport’s Fixtures section on page three. Wednesday was also ‘Thank a Teacher Day’ and I wanted to take this op- portunity to thank all the staff at Waldegrave for their care, dedication and hard work. Our teachers work hard to support each and every student at our school, helping them achieve their best in class and with extra curricular opportunities. This week has really bookended the entire school journey for me. Not only did our Year 7 students welcome and take their parents for a school tour but on Tuesday our new Year 6 parents came for an introductory meeting, while today we have said goodbye to our Year 13 leavers and their families! Saying farewell is always emotional but today it was with joy and great expectations as we know our students are going on to exciting next steps. We are incredibly proud of our Year 13s and wish them all a wonderful summer and every success for the future whether they are going onto higher education, into an apprenticeship or straight to the world of work.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

info@waldegravesch.org STAY CONNECTED WITH US:

It has been a bit of a scorcher this week and next week is also due to be very hot and dry. While the warm weather provides lots of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities, it’s a good time to share some reminders about how our children can keep themselves safe in the hot weather. Teenagers may be reluctant to comply with the basic sun safety principles however, the Teenage Cancer Trust has been highlighting the risks of sunburn, especially during adolescence, as a leading cause of the rise in cases of skin cancers. Skin cancer is the third most common cancer for women and girls aged between 15 and 24. The Teenage Cancer Trust has created this video to encourage sun safety. We also know that periods of hot weather often lead to risk taking be- haviour around our local waterways, particularly groups of young peo- ple jumping into the River Thames at Teddington Lock. This video was created by Richmond Council and the local RNLI, following the death of 14 year old Brian Sasu in the Thames in Richmond in 2022, to explain the dangers to our young people. The London Fire Brigade have also produced this water safety guidance, which explains the dangers of cold water shock.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

Well.. we made it! Congratulations to all Year 13 for reaching the end of their A level exams and the end of their sixth form experience. We have been so impressed with how hard they have all worked over the last two years and they all deserve to do very well. I have thoroughly enjoyed being their head of year and believe they are all ready to begin their new adventures. Thank you Year 13 for being a fantas- tic year group and I look forward to celebrating with you at the leavers assembly this evening.

Congratulations to Luke Roberts in Yr 13 who has been commended for both his French and Spanish essays in the Cambridge essay competition.

I would like to wish all year 13 the very best for the future and look forward to celebrating their A level results with them on 14 August. Further information about results day will be sent out in due course.

MRS PUGH, HEAD OF YEAR 13

‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH

Year 7/8 Rounders v Orleans Park

On Tuesday our Year 7/8 Rounders Team were back at it, this time playing Orleans Park. It was a tight match, with only half a point between the teams at the final result. The Player’s player of the match was again Daisy G and Teacher’s Player was Flo F. Well done to them all for their excellent team work. Following tough trials last weekend, our 42 strong team of athletes attended the 2025 London Borough Schools Athletics Championships at St Mary’s University in Teddington on Wednesday. We had some great results and brought home a few medals: Gold - Jasmine G (Y10, 1500m), Harper M (Y9, High Jump), Olivia D (Y9, Discus) and Silver - Mia N (Y10, Girls Long Jump). These medals add to the gold medal our Year 9 students Daisy M won on Saturday at Middlesex Athletics in the Inter Girls Hammer Throw. We are very proud to say she is now the Middlesex Champion for the Hammer Throw which is an incredible achievement! We are awaiting full results from the organisers of the London Borough Schools Athletics Championships and will update you on this in due course. Well done to everyone who took part and represented our school.
