Craft an exceptionally enticing subject line

Mix and match some of these ideas to see what works best for your brand:

Put the most important words first Use unique, eye-catching language and emoji Use top-performing keywords for your industry and use language that creates a sense of urgency and excitement! Personalise the subject line by using the recipient’s name Use a question in your subject line, turning it into a listicle, highlighting the most important word in the sentence, and/or including a deadline! Advice ranges from about 45 to no more than 100 characters, mostly to keep the subject line visible on mobile devices. Six to 10 words should do the trick!

Carefully craft the first line of the Email body preview

Everyone who receives your email will, in theory, see the subject line. Many recipients will also see the first few words of the body in preview, so if the subject line hooks them, the first line needs to reel them in. Put effort into crafting something rad! Write the first line of the body preview so that it adds to the subject line rather than repeats it. Keep it accurate (don't write clickbait) and get straight to the point! Deliver what you promise!

Find your optimal send time - don't just guess!

MailChimp’s data tells us that Monday-Thursday have pretty much the same open rates, with a slight drop off on Friday and a larger drop off over the weekend. But of course, there's always variation! Emails about hobbies perform best over the weekend, as opposed to business and finance.

The optimal time of day peaks around 10 am with a gradual

decrease that occurs throughout the day.

When we break the high-level time of day curve into some content types, we see that 10 am time fracture. Content in the hobbies category in Mailchimp goes to subscribers whose optimal send time peak is earlier, around 8 am. Perhaps these readers check a lot of this content before they go to work.

You'll try anything to avoid going into the spam folder! So ... Avoid spam words like sale, rich, discount, deal or free! Don't overdo the links in your body, keep them clear and purposeful, and remember to link your images and social channels!

Format for mobile devices

Nothing will send your newsletter into the trash faster than an email that isn’t optimised for mobile. The majority of emails are now read on mobile, so if your email doesn’t look good on a mobile device then your recipient is going to find it too hard to read. They’ll remember your outdated tactics next week, too!

Create a recognisable sender name

A generic or anonymous sender name (think “noreply@yourbusiness.com”) is likely to scare off people entirely! Make sure they know who the email is from! Use your own name, combined with the company name, to present a face that is both professional, personal, and more human.

This is your opportunity to show how uniquely awesome your product or service is, what value you offer, and how you can solve their problem. Be consistent ... but don't be annoying!

When people subscribe to your newsletter, they WANT to hear from you! They EXPECT to hear from you on a regular basis. Make sure you deliver the newsletter to your subscribers as promised. If they signed up for a weekly newsletter, send it once a week! If they signed up for a monthly newsletter, sending them an email three times per year isn’t delivering on your promise. Getting too many emails is at the top of the REPORTED SPAM list, so make sure you deliver what you've promised, and not turn the privilege of having their email address, into a daily sales pitch!

It’s where your subscriber will decide whether or not they want to act on your offer and buy your product or book. your service, or at least click through to find out more. Finish off with a well-crafted call to action (CTA). What do you want them to do next? Maybe it’s to check out a landing page, sign up for a course, download an e-book, or buy your must-have product that will change their life. Your CTA needs to be CLEAR!

Send yourself a copy before you send it to the world

Professional content is content that is free of typo's, grammatical errors, broken links, confusing messages, bungled graphics. Send it to yourself and check for readability, and mistakes. Grammarly can be your best friend here! OR send it to a friend or colleague to check. Pay attention to the subject line, preview body and links. Check it on your mobile AND on your desktop!

Test, test and test again!

Good email marketing platforms allow you to A/B test, or A/B/C/D test, or otherwise “split test” your emails so you can see what works and what doesn’t. Split test your subject lines Split test the time of day you send emails Your email platform should provide you with great reports and data so you can learn over time what works for your audience, and what doesn't!
