I am always blown away by how articulate our students are. We hope that our videos highlight the importance of art as a means of expression and encourage the audience, whether that be staff, students, parents, etc. to realise that art is so much more than just being able to draw pretty pictures. Our scholarship programme has continued to develop with the scholars taking part in a range of exciting extra-curricular activities and workshops. In the Michaelmas Term they visited two new exhibitions – Stephen Cripps: In Real Life and Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent: Cold Light at the Turner Contemporary. Inspired by the work, they embarked on an ambitious workshop, making their own inventions out of scrap materials. Their creativity and problem thinking skills were really put to the test. In the Lent Term, our scholars enjoyed a fun hands-on workshop with Holly Hunter where they produced a collection of beautiful and eerie photograms that engaged with the problems of oceanic pollution
The theme of the competition was ‘Rising’ and had a focus on environmental issues and protest movements. Congratulations to 5th Form artist, Leah Hodge, 1st Form artist, Tara Gill and to 1st Form artists, Jasper, Darcie, Semi and Rufus who created a group piece. Tara has also won the district level round of the Rotary Club’s National Young Artist Competition 2023 with her beautiful painting of a sunrise. A special congratulations to Ava Rosengarten and Arabella Inns too, who have also won art prizes at the Young Artists Festival. I am thrilled to announce further competition success by our students in the Canterbury Art Prize. Claudia Coles won 1st place and Luke Jury 3rd place in the Key Stage 3 category with their thought provoking artwork responding to the theme of ‘Environment’ . Poppy Heming, with her large scale, mixed-media piece based on architectural structures won 2nd place in the 17-18 age category. Our exciting extra-curricular and enrichment programme continues to develop year on year as we see the huge benefits of learning outside of the classroom. We believe that seeing, experiencing and engaging in artwork first hand is incredibly important and
During the Easter holiday, we took a group of 32 students to New York for a trip of a lifetime. The itinerary was crammed full and from the moment we arrived at JFK airport, we were on the move, soaking up the sights and atmosphere of the city that never sleeps. Highlights for me had to be visiting the Museum of Modern Art and The Met. The views from the top of the Empire State building and the Broadway show, Aladdin, were pretty spectacular too. We also enjoyed indulging in American cuisine, eating burgers at the Hard Rock Café and fried shrimp at Bubba Gump.
As we now look ahead to a new academic year, my team and I look forward to another rewarding year, nurturing and developing the young people

In the Summer Term, Cherry Tewfick, who has been a potter for fifty years, ran a ceramics workshop for the scholars. In the workshop, pupils discovered the joy of working with clay and worked on a collaborative piece of artwork which will be displayed in the school grounds.

artists were able to research and develop ideas for their ‘Portrait and Identity’ project. Our Sixth Form artists have also enjoyed the challenge of further developing their observation and drawing skills by taking part in a series of life drawing classes.
Our hotel was located around the corner from Central Square, so we really were in the middle of the lights and action. Following the huge success of our first residential trip to New York, I am already making plans for the next one in 2024.
