MUSIC
It has been another music-filled year at St Lawrence College, throughout which the talent and dedication of our musicians has been on frequent display, and greatly appreciated by the whole school community. The annual Cabaret Night early in the year was once again a very popular event, drawing superb performances from pupils and staff. It was encouraging that pupils from all year groups took part, and there were some outstanding items. Amongst the younger pupils, Alyssa Yeung sang ‘When I was your man’ (Bruno Mars) with a maturity and tone beyond her years, and Rufus Tassell also impressed the audience with his poised and effortless singing in ‘Not while I’m around’ (Sondheim). There were further excellent solo vocal contributions from Sabija Gordon, Grace Huckstep, Hajdana Todorovic, Ashwin Muralitharan, Didi Brooks and Klara Bachteler. Mrs Flory and Miss Chopping performed poetry and ‘Memory’ respectively, with Miss Chopping dressing for the part, complete with cat ears and whiskers! Slick instrumental solos were supplied by Mali Nicholls (saxophone) and Marianne Robinson (violin), and a favourite with the audience,
who were encouraged to sing along, was Neil Diamond’s popular song, ‘Sweet Caroline’, performed by brother and sister, Hannah and Owen Todd (violin and drums) and Marianne Robinson (violin). There was one dance offering, performed by an enthusiastic group of Bellerby girls (aka The Cheese Gang) who had clearly worked hard to perfect the intricate choreography. As usual, the House Band was on top form, ably aided by Mrs Owen (saxophone) and Revd. Goodwin-Hudson (guitar). This year’s Michaelmas Term concert was a wonderful celebration of the wide range of musical talent which we are lucky to have at the School. There was a hint of the festive season, with tinsel adorning the music stands, and the audience enjoyed a few Christmas favourites, alongside other standard orchestral and vocal repertoire. All the instrumental groups and choirs performed well and there were some excellent solo performances from Klara Bachteler (voice), Taejun Choi (cello) and Maia Perry (piano). The Ukulele Group, formed especially for this concert, were joined by Alyssa Yeung in ‘Count on me’ (Bruno Mars) and ‘I’m yours’ (Jason Mraz). The Vocal Group gave an uplifting rendition of ‘Rewrite the stars’ from The Greatest Showman, while the Jazz Group’s version of Watermelon Man was stylishly played. The concert ended with the Rock Band’s rousing performance of ‘Twist and Shout’, after which the audience enjoyed some delicious mince pies and mulled wine.
