EAST KENT SCHOOLS TOGETHER
East Kent Schools Together Partnership has provided more opportunities than ever this year, for teachers and students in the thirteen state and independent member schools. The events that St Lawrence College has been involved in are too numerous to mention, but as well as many of the old favourites, the partnership has added in several new opportunities this year. We now have EDI and Safeguarding groups for teachers and new sports, science, medical, dance, music and art events for pupils. One highlight for our pupils was a puppetry workshop at The King’s School, Canterbury, and another was the leadership workshop run by Canterbury Christchurch University for our Student Voice Members. In the Autumn, St Lawrence College ran The Big Design Challenge with Dr Zoe Laughlin from The Institute of Making, where pupils made up teams from across the EKST schools and competed to design the most useful and original invention.
Once again, Mr Hill ran The Big Explore at the Pines Calyx at St Margarets Bay and pupils had the chance to meet and make new friends, gaining confidence in the process. Later in the year, Mrs Owens invited the UpFront Theatre Company to the College, along with pupils from the partner schools. Upfront is an educational theatre company that works closely with the PSHE Association to create interactive plays and workshops, extending students learning around PSHE in a way that cannot easily be achieved in lessons. The event received some fantastic feedback from all of those involved. We are very proud of the contribution that we have made to the partnership and very pleased that our students have benefitted so much from our involvement. It is a genuinely excellent organisation, and we are looking forward to seeing how it grows over the coming academic year.
SCIENCE
SCIENCE LIVE TRIP 5th Form students have had the opportunity to listen live to some of the most renowned UK scientists and broadcasters on the fields of genetics, space science, synthetic chemistry and theoretical physics. One of them, Professor Jim Al-Khalili thrilled everyone with his question: is time travel really possible? He explained that not only do the laws of Physics allow for time to travel, it has been proven possible in many experiments. Time travel into the future has actually been achieved. In another talk, we heard how we can explore our interconnected global ancestry and the human experience that binds all together, by Professor Alice Roberts. Also, Steve Jones talked about how the subtle interactions between DNA and environment shape who we are and how we die. The students found the lectures engaging and captivating, and hopefully they have gained a clearer sense of what science is, how it is done and what it might be for.
SCIENCE WEEK The theme for this year’s Science week was “Connections”. Based on this idea the 1st Form students explored the ideas of photosynthesis, evolution and environment and enthusiastically presented their research projects to parents. Some students worked on growing cress and tomatoes and others worked on the evolution of monkeys and ocean acidification. The 2nd Form students created amazing posters on the theme of “Connections” for the National British Science Competition.
