STEM DAY This year 96 year 5 students from 24 primary schools have been invited to compete in the Thanet Primary school STEM Challenges. This has proven to be a popular and much anticipated event in our College. The day was fun, engaging and fulfiling with three science and engineering experiments. The pupils collaborated with excitement, and demonstrated their creativity and problem solving skills, whether building a tower with spaghetti and marshmallows, dropping an egg safely, or measuring a gas during the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase in potato. The day finished with the famous Chemical magic show performed by Mr Wilde and Dr Nicholls and the science quiz. A fantastic day of enrichment for all students visiting St Lawrence. We are proud of our Junior School which won the 1st place, with 2nd place going to Bromstone Primary School and 3rd place to Northbourne Park School.

SCIENCE LECTURE BY PROFESSOR LEWIS DARTNELL

ECONOMICS & BUSINESS

The 3rd, 4th and Lower Sixth Form students were inspired by Professor Lewis Dartnell and his talk about “The Knowledge”, his TIMES bestseller book on how to rebuild the world after an apocalypse. This was a talk full of fascinating facts about science and technology that underpins our everyday life in a clear and engaging way.

The School had another very successful year in the Northeastern University London essay writing competition open to Lower Sixth students. This year the question was ‘What are the most likely implications of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia?’. Students made use of a wide range of sources to investigate how sanctions had impacted both the Russian economy as well as the global economy more generally. They gained experience by working alongside an academic from UCL who was also impressed by the quality of the submissions. Congratulations go to William Durrant, Abdu Modibo, Joba Oyeniyi-Adebayo, Paviel Ruban, Alvin Thapa, Rosie Thornton and Myles Wise for reaching the position of ‘finalist’, a position reserved for only the top 12% of submissions. Mr Brown, Head of Economics and Business said “I am very proud of our economics students for taking part in such a challenging competition.

Mrs E Kouthouri, Head of Science

To be demonstrating undergraduate skills in the lower sixth demonstrates how resilient our students are and also the level of intellectual curiosity which they have. For 87% of those who entered to reach the position of ‘finalist’ is a remarkable achievement and something we are all very proud of. Previous participants have reported how useful they found the competition in preparing them for academic work at university.”

Mr C Brown, Head of Economics and Business
