RS & PSYCHOLOGY
The Religious Studies and Psychology Department has made significant progress this academic year. We were pleased to be able to enter pupils into formal examinations once again and are delighted by some of the exceptional progress made by our pupils. Lower down the school, Rev. Goodwin-Hudson continues to develop the teaching and learning by offering an even greater emphasis on developing Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics (ACPs) as he delivers the varied and vibrant course content to the 1st and 2nd Form. Mr Jameson saw many students excel at GCSE and the Philosophy course continues to attract ambitious and determined pupils, following another successful year. In Psychology, Phoebe Smallbone set the standard throughout her two years of study. Miss Vinson selected her as a worthy prize winner and we were thrilled by her achieving an A in her final examinations, narrowly missing an A* by one mark. We thank Phoebe for her determined attitude, willingness to consistently seek ways to improve, and skills with mental agility and precision in lessons. She is a brilliant critical thinker and developed her knowledge, application and evaluation skills to an extremely high standard, taking ownership of her learning. Although, it should be stated that this particular cohort had many exceptional pupils who excelled in Psychology. Special recognition for excellent performance goes to Wendy Yusuf, Yasmin Jalo-Waziri, Oyame Apochi, Poppy Heming, Supriya Rai, Chigo Ike-Chinwo, Tishe Laniyan,
As this fine academic year draws to a close, there is so much to celebrate within the Geography Department. The Department has been hugely blessed by the presence of some outstanding year groups, in particular those of the 5th Form and Upper Sixth Form. With many of these learners having studied the subject at the College since the 1st Form, including this year’s Geography prize winner Phoebe Smallbone. There is therefore cause for reflection as some many exceptional young geographers leave us for the next phase of their academic career. The A Level group however deserves particular praise, as their work has been an inspiration to other students within the subject lower down the College. Exemplary coursework pieces from Phoebe Smallbone, Hajdana Todorovic, Felicity Ward, Chloe Plumb, and Ralph Harrison, all stand as testimony to the depth of their collective geographical thinking. The 5th Form can also be very proud of what they have achieved over the last two academic years, with some of them on course for the very highest results in the summer. Their work has been commendable in all areas, with some superb field trips being part of their two years. Mr Hill and Mr Briscoe have both done a
wonderful job in inspiring these young geographers to consider the world around them with confidence.
The Department has enjoyed some excellent educational trips this year, most notably with a fantastic visit to Iceland, which was enjoyed by pupils from across the College, especially the A Level and GCSE geographers. Great thanks should therefore be given to Mr Hill, who can be congratulated for organising a superb educational experience. We were also able to make the most of excellent field studies days in the more local context too, with visits to: Stratford and the Olympic Park, Reculver, and the Little Stour. Finally, it is with enormous gratitude that the Department thanks Mr Briscoe, who is leaving the department after two superb years of service. He will be greatly missed by pupils and staff alike, as he has been an outstanding teacher and colleague. All involved in geography across the College wish him the very best in his return to academia.
Charlotte Bunton, Ehi Aikhomu and Gabriel Hayden. For Religious Studies A Level, we continue to study the WJEC Eduqas specification, which requires a study of Christianity, Philosophy, and Ethics. It is a really exciting course and the pupils enjoy learning about the world of ideas and their connections to these components. In a wide-ranging course, the students have enjoyed examining belief, non-belief, forms of argument, language, and the application of theory to the real world. The class should be praised for showing grit and determination until the examination date and they can be proud of their successes. After two years of study, Christian Tomlin can be proud of his excellent final outcome, as well as his Philosophy Prize award. We are pleased to see that uptake for Religious Studies A Level continues to grow and look forward to the coming year.
