Our girls U12 and U13 squads both had relatively good seasons however often they did not have their stronger players as those individuals played in one of the boys A teams to help further develop their skill sets. A hugely enjoyable season where a lot of progress was made and many of those girls will be in a great position moving to hard ball next year. Standout players were Millie Foster and Umaiza Malik who both excelled with bat and ball. The girls U14 XI had a great season having won all but one match with some excellent performances and wins against Kent College, Ashford School, Sutton Valence School and The King’s School, Canterbury twice. The U15 girls however set the bar by having an outstanding season and qualified for the National Finals on Monday 4th September 2023 ending up eventually finishing 4th in the country! This achievement shouldn’t be taken lightly as being one of the smallest schools in the National Competition, to go and finish 4th is an astonishing achievement. With many of our girls also a year, and in some cases two years below, we will continue to have a very strong side for at least another couple of years and with the programmes we have in place we will undoubtedly continue to push against the best schools in the country. On route to the National Finals they beat some top schools which included Bromley High School, Brighton College, Cranleigh School and Surbiton High School to name a few. The girls 1st XI lost only one game and had plenty of good wins against good schools such as The King’s School, Canterbury who we beat on two occasions. Many of the U15 girls also played in the 1st XI which gave them all senior level experience.
In the last week of term, we have our annual Cricket Week which is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the school’s calendar. Eight games in five days across several age groups and teams allowed us to have a festival of celebration and schools come far and wide to play. We played three declaration matches, one 40 over match and four T20s to finish off a very busy cricketing year. It is always someone’s first Cricket Week, and it is always someone’s last Cricket Week. This week allowed us to give thanks to those (players, coaches, parents, grounds team, umpires, catering and sponsors) who have helped continue to support the cricket at St Lawrence College.
well by Duncan with 20 wickets at an average of 15.75 across 65.1 overs.
fixtures throughout the season against opposition such as MCC, Tonbridge School, The King’s School, Canterbury, Langley Park School for Boys, Band of Brothers and Sutton Valence School just to name a few. It was pleasing that we beat every private school on our circuit and a great legacy was left by our Upper Sixth leavers. The most pleasing performances was a 164 run win against Kent College, a 137 run win against King’s Canterbury, an 84 run win against Tonbridge School and a 28 run win against Sutton Valence School. As mentioned previously we also play men’s teams to help further push our cricketers and in doing so had a good win against Ash CC and Band of Brothers. We also secured a draw against MCC, however this years Old Lawrentians proved one test too far where former pupil Joe Mitchell scored an excellent 153. It was fantastic to see so many OLs and we look forward to seeing them return next year. Captain Duncan Moore was one of the standout performers with both the bat and ball this season. He scored 715 runs at an average
Other good performances came from Ahsan Talha with two half centuries whilst Thomas Izzard and Jack Foster both achieved one half century each in the season. Clayton Horlick and Mark Munava along with their coach Mr Robey came over from St Benedict’s in South Africa for five weeks as part of an exchange programme. All three were fantastic and bought into the Boarding community
culture. Both Clayton and Mark grew as young men and took on the English conditions very well, although it did take them
Duncan Moore was awarded the Geoffrey Phillpott Memorial Bat and Mali Nicholls was awarded the Kalea Moore Bat for being the leading scorers of the season. Both of these were also awarded batter of Cricket Week with Duncan having scored 240 runs including a fine 125 against Band of Brothers and Mali for scoring a wonderful 58* (retired) against The King’s School, Canterbury. Olly Skelton picked up bowler of the week with 9 wickets in five games and Mairead McGrath was awarded the bowling award in the girls Cricket Week with 5 wickets. Well done to all.
a few games to adjust. Thanks to Mr Robey and both Clayton and Mark for a very enjoyable five weeks and we wish them all the best for their future.
