care to aid them financially. But the influence of the Gospel had led them to see that Christians are members of each other- and that- the needs of the saints at Jerusalem were their needs also. So when the news of their pressing financial reverses reached them, the Christians of Anti och were ready to help. They gath ered a generous offering “every man according to his ability” (the most he could give) and sent it for the relief of the Judean brethren. Barnabas and Saul were honored to bear this contri bution—undoubtedly the first of its kind in the annals of church history. Thus began missionary giving which continues to this day to be one-of the “Big Three” of missions, the others being going and praying. III. T he N ew . E nterprise (12:24-13:4) Antioch has fhe distinction of being the first missionary church. No won der with teachers and preachers like Barnabas and Saul! Wherever the Word of God is really taught, interest in missions will follow. Upon the return of Barnabas and Saul from this enjoyable errand, they found the Christians at Antioch even more advanced in their spiritual un derstanding. They were ready for anything the Lord wanted them to do! It encouraged the apostles, for they realized that the Word of God would not return void—no matter what the opposition (12:24). This church at Antioch became so exercised about the needs of other unevangelized peo ple that they actually “ sent away” the apostles. They in turn were “sent forth by the Holy Spirit.” The real missionary section of Acts follows these passages, a study of which would clarify the entire sub ject of the missionary enterprise. Points and Problems 1. “And; the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number be lieved, and turned unto the Lord" (Acts 11:21). As the human hand is an instrument of service, so the hand of the Lord represents His divine power. Marvelous are the things man accomplishes with his hand. With it he paints pictures and builds sky scrapers. Think, then, of the power and blessing of the hand of God work ing among men. At Antioch, it meant salvation and dedication of life. Our God still performs mighty works of grace through the power of His nail- pierced hand, which has lost none of its old time power. 2. "Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad" (11: 23). Here two things concerning the grace of God may be noted. First, the effects can be seen. When a real work of grace is accomplished in human hearts there is sure to be an outward
manifestation of it. The holy flame cannot be hidden. It will leap forth from the confines of the heart. Sec ond, the grace of God brings joy to the people of God. It makes little difference where or what may be the manner of expression. God’s saints always rejoice in the evidences of His grace. 3. “Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren" (11:29). This early church realized, first, its responsibility toward other members of the body of Christ. They could not endure seeing their brethren suffer and do nothing about it. The New Testament plainly teaches such oneness of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-31). Surely s t r o n g members ought to help the weak. Then, the early church illustrated the proper basis on which their responsibility should be discharged, namely, “every man according to his ability.” This is God’s way, and when It is followed, blessing always attends His work. (See 1 Cor. 16:2). For the Children O ur C hurch at (W ork for O thers A cts 11:19-30; 12:24-13:4 MEMORY VERSE: "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every crea ture” (Mark 16:15). AIM: To teach that it is both a duty and a privilege to share the Gospel message with those who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ in our land and other lands. APPROACH: How proud we are of all the young men who have fought so bravely across the seas to save our country and the other countries, from the enemy. To be a good soldier re quires courage; and to be a real Christian missionary, one must also be very brave. LESSON STORY: As the first Chris tians grew in number, those who did not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour began to do them harm for worshiping Him. Many Christians died rather than say that they would not serve the Saviour. Some went to other countries and preached the Gospel to men and women who had not heal'd the story of Jesus. As new churches were formed, some of the Christian men went from one church to another to teach the people more about the Lord Jesus. Whenever the Christians in one church had any need, the mem bers of another church would send money to help them. God was pleased with the work that these Christians did for Him. At last, there were so many Chris tians who believed that everyone should hear the story of the Cross, that the Holy Spirit told them to choose two of their greatest teachers as missionaries to go and tell others
