SUMMER TERM

YEAR 2 HARP DEMONSTRATION On Tuesday 25 April our Year 2 pupils were treated to a wonderful harp demonstration delivered by Miss Tamara Young armed with her impressive large pedal harp and our beautiful two school lever Harps kindly bought for the school by the friends of St Lawrence College. The children listened fascinated as Miss Young shared with them the history of the harp – of how it had existed since Egyptian times and has been portrayed in Egyptian artwork before performing Greensleeves to the children by way of introduction to its sound.

Israel knew that the harp was made from wood, metal, and strings. Monty spotted that you need to pluck the harp to make sound; interestingly, we discovered that the word ‘harp’ comes

from an Anglo-Saxon word which means ‘to pluck’. Demonstrating the range and some of the effects the harp can create, Miss Young then played a variety of pieces including a cadenza from the Nutcracker suite. The children sat spellbound throughout and thoroughly enjoyed the demonstration with each given a chance to play a lever harp guided by Miss Young.
