The JustCallMoe Journal March/April 2025
Last year, we rolled into the Oviedo Bowling Center for our first-ever Just Call Moe Celebrity Bowl-o-Rama — and it was a total strike of success! We had an absolute blast, raised money for a great cause, and couldn’t wait to do it all over again. I’m excited to announce that we’re ready to hit the lanes for a rematch with some of Orlando’s favorite local celebrities with our Second Annual Just Call Moe Celebrity Bowl-O-Rama on Saturday, April 12, from 2–5 p.m. It promises to be another afternoon full of fun, and it’s already shaping up to be even bigger and better. With a new lineup of celebrity bowlers, we hope to raise even more money for Rosie’s Adventures. This incredible nonprofit supports children and their families who are impacted by childhood cancer. Last year, while our 300-plus guests and Orlando stars competed on the lanes, we raised $16,000 for Rosie’s Adventures. I can’t think of a more deserving organization to benefit from our hijinks and strikes! 1-800-CALL-MOE JustCallMoe.com This April, the Lanes Are Calling Join the Second Annual JustCallMoe Celebrity Bowl-O-Rama!

Most criminals sentenced to seven years have committed a serious crime, such as armed robbery or multiple burglaries. In 1807, however, a British man named John Godding was sentenced to seven years in an Australian penal colony for an entirely different offense: stealing seven pineapples. The prickly-skinned golden fruit was so prized in 16th, 17th, and 18th-century Britain that pineapples commanded exorbitant prices and were even available to rent to prosperous Brits who featured them as centerpieces at parties. The pineapple craze drove prices for the fruit so high that they became a prized target among petty thieves. Pineapples are native to the Caribbean and South America, and Christopher Columbus is credited with introducing them to Europe after finding them in Guadeloupe in 1493. The fruit quickly became de rigueur among the wealthy as an exotic delicacy. Importing pineapples was difficult, however, because they usually spoiled en route. In the 1770s, pineapples were selling in England for the equivalent of $17,000–$23,000 apiece in 2025 U.S. dollars.
Europeans went wild over the sweet, fragrant fruit, which became a symbol of warmth and hospitality incorporated into Renaissance architecture. Kings and queens clamored for pineapple, including Catherine the Great and King Ferdinand of Spain. King Charles II of England even commissioned a portrait of himself being presented with one. Initial attempts to cultivate pineapples in Britain’s cool climate failed. Transplanting and propagating plant stock and nurturing young plants to maturity was a painstaking process made more difficult by the fruit’s long maturation cycle, which requires as long as 2 1/2 years or more from planting to mature pineapples. British farmers tried for centuries before finally succeeding at producing pineapples in “hot houses” or “pineries” heated by furnaces placed within glass- walled enclosures. Advancements in global trade eventually made pineapples more readily available in Europe. Had the unfortunate Mr. Godding, the pineapple thief, committed his crime in modern times, he would probably have gotten off with a mere $100 fine.

If it’s safe to do so, gather evidence, like photos of the injuries and the contact information of the dog owner and witnesses. In Florida, a dog owner is legally responsible for injuries caused by their dog, regardless of the dog’s prior behavior. It doesn’t matter if the dog has never bitten anyone or shown aggression in the past. However, there are a few exceptions to this strict liability based on the victim’s behavior. If someone provoked the dog, a person was trespassing, or the victim ignored posted warning signs like “Beware of Dog,” the owner’s liability may be reduced or eliminated. THE SALACIOUS STORY OF BALDASSARRE COSSA From Pirate to Pope
long enough to pursue a new career in religion. Unfortunately, a desire for power rather than holy redemption prompted his turn to God. An opportunist and conman, Cossa lied, betrayed, and manipulated his way to prominence in the Catholic Church, eventually reigning as Pope John XXIII from 1410 to 1415. Not surprisingly, controversy marked his time as a living symbol of God’s grace. For one thing, it occurred during the Western Schism, a fractious era in Catholic history when two other men claimed the role of pope and refused to resign. The strife caused by this confusion over papal authority was matched only by Cossa’s fleshly indulgences. He is said to have bedded hundreds of women — including nuns — during his contested reign.
Cossa’s one-man sinning spree eventually landed him in prison, yet, remarkably, he was named Cardinal-Bishop of Tusculum shortly after his release! Much to the relief of devoted Catholics the world over — and, presumably, a fair portion of Italy’s female population — he died shortly after assuming the new role, leaving religious scholars and historians to forever marvel at how much this man of nonexistent morality had achieved in life. Considering Cossa’s infamy, it is no surprise that he is now known mainly as “Antipope” John XXIII. The name “Pope John XXIII” was retired for centuries before a man better suited to hold the moniker chose it and ran the Catholic Church from 1958–1963.
History is littered with unsavory souls forever scorned for their foul deeds. Still, few scoundrels reached the depths of depravity with greater aplomb than notorious pirate Baldassarre Cossa (circa 1370–1419) — the man otherwise known as Pope John XXIII. A corrupt criminal whose actions would make Don Corleone blush, Cossa and his brothers built a lucrative business the old-fashioned way — by robbing and pillaging. Although his siblings were executed for their crimes, he survived
