Jason Laframboise reclaims his life

Jason Laframboise is taking full charge of his life again, thanks to the support of his family, his friends, and his community of St-Pascal-Baylon. Friday night at the Ronald Lalonde Com- munity Centre in St-Pascal-Baylon, it was almost standing-roomonly and hard to find an empty seat at any of the tables during a May 1 spaghetti supper night special event hosted by the Club Optimiste de St-Pas- cal-Baylon. The theme of the evening was an informal «welcome home, Jason» and a fundraiser event to help the Laframboise family with some of the medical expenses incurred for the life-saving lung transplant surgery Jason Laframboise underwent early in April. «I’m really, really impressed by the gene- rosity of people and of the local businesses,» said Julie Henri, club chairwoman for the fundraiser supper, adding that the number of diners gathered in the hall by the early part of the evening numbered between 250 and 300. «And there were a lot of takeout too.» La Binerie catering outfit in neighbouring Plantagenet provided all of the spaghetti and sauce for diners. The Optimiste club members themselves manned the crock pots to serve up plates of spaghetti and, for those who wanted some also, a plateful of baked beans. During the evening, there were pauses in the dining for announcements of special cheque presentations from various groups and individuals. As of Monday, the final tally on the fundraising was still going on. Meanwhile, Jason Laframboise sat at one of the head tables near the stage to chat with family, friends and well-wishers. The lineup of people wanting to say even a simple «hello» never seemed to finish up altogether during the first hour or two of the evening. During one break in the line of well-wishers, Laframboise was able to spare a fewminutes for an update interview on his situation and his hopes and dreams now. «I feel great,» he said. «I’ve been waiting in Toronto for this for 20 months.» Laframboise underwent lung trans-

But, otherwise, Jason Laframboise is ready to take back his life again and he has the support of his family, friends and community to thank for that, as shown by the crowd which turned out for a spaghetti supper fundraiser in his name hosted by the Club Optimiste de St-Pascal-Baylon.

He still has about three weeks or more of physiotherapy to go through as part of his post-operation treat- ment, which means still calling Toronto a second home but now he knows that he will soon be back in his real home of St-Pascal- Baylon for good. Meanwhile, when he is indoors and in any sort of a crowded situation, he wears a simple surgical mask, just as a precaution,
for now at least. «I don’t want to take a chance on catching a cold,» he said. «If I’m outside, though, I take it off. They (doctors) told me, ‘Don’t live in a bubble.’» He has a quick answer when asked what is the one thing he looked forward to doing after his surgery. «Playing with my children,» he said. «Playing baseball with them, anything.»
