Tortilla de Harina Casera (Homemade Flour Tortilla) (Submitted by Kelsey Espada – Elvira Espada’s Daughter)
Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour 1 ½ teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• • • • •
1 cup water
1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter
How To Make :
1. In a large non-stick frying pan or skillet, heat the olive oil over moderate heat. Add the sliced onions, green and red bell peppers, and crushed garlic. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5 minutes until they’re tender.
2. Prepare the Dough • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. • In a microwave-safe bowl or large measuring cup, melt the butter together with the water. Let the mixture cool slightly until it’s warm, not hot. • Gradually pour the melted butter mixture into the dry ingredients, using your hand to mix and incorporate it slowly. Continue adding and mixing until a soft, moist dough forms. • Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and no longer sticky. It should form a cohesive ball. • Place the dough in a clean bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rest for 20 minutes at room temperature. • Lightly flour your countertop or work surface. • Divide the rested dough into 8 equal pieces using a bench scraper or knife. • Roll each piece into a smooth ball, using the floured surface to help shape them. • With a rolling pin, roll out each dough ball into a thin, round tortilla. • Tip: Start rolling from the center outward in all directions to create an even circle. 3. Shape the Tortillas 4. Cook the Tortillas • Heat a large skillet or comal over medium-high heat. • Place a rolled-out tortilla onto the hot surface. Cook until air bubbles begin to form—about 30 seconds to 1 minute. • Flip and cook the other side until light brown spots appear. Each side should be lightly browned but soft. • Remove and place on a plate covered with a clean towel to keep warm and soft. • Optional: Add a pat of butter while warm and enjoy your favorite toppings!
Behind the Recipe:
Learning authentic recipes has always been something I’m passionate about. While I’ve always picked up tortillas from the store, I had a feeling they’d be simple and more rewarding to make at home. There’s something special
about making a staple from scratch, and I’m excited to keep exploring more traditional recipes like this one. Credit to TikTok@carolinagrowing
