Meditations in Romans

AUGUST 1 Scripture: Romans 1:1-7

“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ . . . separated unto the gospel of. God.” By others Paul was called an apostle, but he termed himself a servant. He was deeply aware of the privilege of apostleship: the carrying- of the Gospel message to the lost. Yet, he also recognized a higher responsi bility: that of being a bond slave of Jesus Christ. A bond slave of Jesus Christ! What greater position could be sought! Christ’s part is the purchase of- the servant, mine the surrender to my Redeemer. Thus, I come to know a fellowship that, bears' eter nal fruit. May I put my name into this Scripture, and know a new and precious experience with my Lord. AUGUST 2 Scripture: Homans 1:8*23 “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” "Christ. Jesus can be seen in every page of the Scripture,” is a statement often made. Where is He seen in this first chap ter of Romans? In salvation, yes, but sin is also related here; sin in its worst form, un- cleannness, physical and spiritual. Christ is seen as its remedy. Every sinner needs the Saviour, and this is the.Gospel: God’s power to save man by Jesus Christ. Becoming just through faith in Christ, I shall live by faith in Him, faith for every detail of the entire day. faith in the incorruptible God. mani fested and glorified in Jesus Christ, my Savidur and Lord. AUGUST 3 Scripture: Romans 2:11 “For there is no respect of persons with God ” Fellowship with Jesus Christ, which is vital to a healthy Christian life, is often broken by sin. God’s peace is for those who "by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality.” While my salvation is not by my works, my works show my possession and understand ing of salvation. God gives to everyone the same divine Door for salvation, the same power for testimony, the same holy Gift for victory.. The first must be entered, the sec ond must be used, the third must be ac cepted. all by faith. God is no respecter of persons, and shows no partiality: sin carries consequences for the believer and the un believer. For those who seek it. cleansing from sin results in fellowship with Jesus Christ our Lord, and God our Father in the Holy Spirit (I John 1:9). AUGUST 4 Scripture: Romans 2:24 “ For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written” Will any unbeliever be stumbled today, or caused to refuse the Gift of God because of my failure? This is a question for every Christian to ask himself. To look outward, then inward, makes the heart, tremble with fear, and a sense of Inability to meet the tests of the day; but the look upward brings assurance of the all-sufficient grace of Jesus Christ, the ever- ready supply of power through the Holy Spirit, and puts to flight all fear; a sense of confidence replaces the realization of one’s own weakness. The day begins, con tinues, and ends in victory because Jesus never fails the one who trusts Him.

AUGUST 9 Scripture: Romans 5:2

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Access into the grace of justification and peace with God is through one door; all that climb up some other Way are thieves , and robbers. This is the GospeJ for us to prpcJajm today: this is the good news for wrhich men wait; this is the best gift w*e can give to the lost: the knowledge that there is access into the grace of salvation through faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ our Lord. AUGUST 10 Scripture: Romans 5:21 “ That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.” "About the reign of sin there is no doubt. The tyrant forbids men to believe, in his tyranny, but compels them to go hither and thither chanting his praises. How gross ly deluded they are; this monarch reigns unto death. For the believer, this is a, Jhing of the past. Sin hath reigned, but now has no more dominion over him. He, yea, every believer, has been translated into another kingdom; ‘delivered . . . from the power of, darkness . . . into the kingdom of his dear Son.’ ”—George Bowen. AUGUST 11 Scripture: Romans 6:2 “How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein t ” When the believer acknowledges any act or thought or attitude of his to be sin, he is Willing to be delivered from it. So long as we are unwilling to label "weakness of the flesh.” "infirmity of disposition,” anythin? contrary to God\s best for us,,sin, or if w< persist in refusing to face sin as such, wl know no victory. When we do call sins, sin we are ready to let God "subdue all thing.« unto himself.” W'hen the Christian under* stands the reality of the Spirit’s pow’er, h< is unwilling to continue in sin. AUGUST 12 Scripture: Romans 6:4 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like a| Christ was raised up from the dea by the glory of the Father, even s we also should walk in newness life.” "If we want to be sharers of the life Christ, we must be separated also by dea from all contacts with sin. Therefore, to 1 baptized with Christ is to be baptized ini His death.” So writes Dr. E. S. Young he presents the challenge to the ChristiaJ to w*alk in the new life that Is his in Chri -The old nature prefers death to life; tl new nature glories in life over death. Ti| Lord works thus with the life of the b liever: not making it over, but making new so that the saved one walks in nej ness of life. I

august s Scripture: Romans 3:2 “ Unto them were committed the oracles of God.” Entrusted with the oracles of God! Some of us have been unfaithful to the charge. Sometimes we -have been selfish, feeding on the Word, satisfied with its supply, assured by its promises, content, with its provisions. Around us are the needy ones, some un aware of their spiritual anemia which is deadly, some conscious of their heart hun ger. Shall I share with them the precious Word of God? Let me be faithful. Lord, today. Speak through my life and lips, and let me have the joy of giving Thy Word to some soul. AUGUST 6 Scripture: Romans 3:24 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Of justification. Or. Joi.n c. Page says: "Although free, it is not cheap. The right eous grace of God provides it. freely for us, but at great cost to Himself.” The value of a human soul. Calvary. And Calvary means for us, salvation, justification, sanctifica tion, glorifica!ion: all freely given, but less. Gratefully accepted from the Father’s hand, these precious.gifts of grace establish our walk, and result in the dwelling of peace and confidence in our hearts. “ Unto you therefore which believe he is precious.” AUGUST 7 Scripture: Romans 4:12 “ Walk in the steps of that faith.” Someone writes: "When T was a boy in the North, we used to have great fun with a large jewelry store in our city. The door worked automatically. All one had to do was to step on the mat and the door opened as if some unseen hand were at work. Since becoming a Christian. I have learned that when I step out by faith on the promises of God, God’s unseen hand opens all doors for me.” God has promised us open doors, and guidance for the way; let us accept His leadership. AUGUST 8 Scripture: Romans 4:25 “ Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justifi cation.” "That we might not fall into the hands of the living God, Christ was delivered into the hands of sinful men. He stood before an earthly tribunal . . . that we might escape the dread tribunal where infinite Justice sits. He was delivered up by sinful men to sinful men.” that we might, be delivered up by the sinless Man to the righteous God. God gave Himself that we might be free from all His wrath against unrighteousness. Amazing grace! Marvelous love! Limitless provision^ for you and me! Joyfully let me -live, a witness to His abundant grace.
