On 1 March 2017 regulations come into force which requires a 50% turnout in all industrial action ballots.

The Trade Union Act 2016 (Commencement No. 3 and Transitional) Regulations 2017 bring into force several changes which come into effect on 1 March 2017.

Geographical extent - The Trade Union Act applies to all four nations of the UK.

For industrial action in important public services (education, health, transport, border security and fire), an additional threshold of 40% of support to take action from all eligible members must be met for action to be legal.

Two weeks’ notice will also have to be given to employers of industrial action, twice the current 7 day requirement.

See this article from employment law experts Pinsent Masons which provides a very good summary of all the changes.
