Police need help to identify human remains police beat Ontario’s chief coroner and the OPP are trying to determine whose remains were found in the Five Counties region just before the Easter weekend. The OPP detachment for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry re- ceived a report April 17 of human remains found on Steen Road near the Thompson Road intersection near Winchester. A preliminary examination has confirmed they are human remains but the identity of the deceased and the cause of death is still unknown as of press time. The remains have been turned over the Oshawa office of the Ontario Chief Coroner’s department for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile the SDG OPP Crime Unit investi- gation continues under the direction of Assistant Inspector Jim Gorry. Anyone with information that might help with the investigation can call the SDG OPP office at 613-534-2223 or toll-free to 1-888-310-1122. Licence to scan Catching people driving without a proper licence in Eastern Ontario will be a little easier for the OPP now. The OPP East Region office announced the arrival of four new patrol cars equipped with the Automated Licence Plate Recognition system (ALPR). This makes five such vehicles pa- trolling highways and byways in the east region now. The ALPR targets vehicle licence plates recorded with any serious traffic record complaint active or pending and also whether the owner of the vehicle licence plate has a licence suspension or other related issue, including if the vehicle is reported missing or stolen. Stolen I.D. A burglar with an eye for collectibles and personal identity information hit a home in The Nation municipality. Const. Alain Potvin is seeking information to help find the person who broke through the front door into a County Road 3 home in broad daylight April 9. A coin collection, some jewellery, and several documents containing personal information were taken. Anyone with information can call Const. Potvin at the Hawkesbury OPP detachment at 613-632-2729 or the CrimeStoppers confidential tips line, toll-free, at 1-800-222-8477. Impaired charge During a routine patrol in Rockland last month police pulled over a vehicle after noting that the licence plate was expired. The driver, Julie Chartrand, 42, of Rockland was later charged with driving while having a blood-alcohol reading exceeding 80 millimetres. Cellphone tracker Stealing someone’s cellphone may not be the best thing to do given some of the apps and tech addons mobile phones have now. Police answered a call from the Gagné Street neighbourhood in Hammond March 26 from a resident who reported having found his stolen cellphone. Using a tracker feature of the phone, the resident was able to trace it to a neighbouring house. A 17-year-old youth was found in possession of the phone. A computer inquiry also re- vealed the youth is a suspect in other crimes. He is now charged with possession of stolen property, three charges of theft and one charge of failure to comply with a court order. His name is withheld under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Scamwarning Spring weather means yardwork cleanup and the start of home improvement projects. It also heralds the arrival of the «bargain contractor» scam. Homeowners should be wary of getting calls on the phone or at the door from people claiming to represent contractors and offering special introductory deals or cut-rate prices on exterior work, roofing repairs or driveway paving. OPP in Eastern Ontario have had re- ports about suspect door-to-door calls for home reno contracts. A reputable contractor will provide a written quote or contract with an estimate on the cost for a project and will also be able to provide references on request. Do not make any verbal agreements without a written and signed contract or sign an agreement that comes with a demand for a large sum of money up-front before the work even starts.
