Someone is trying to pull the “romance scam” in Eastern Ontario. One OPP detachment is investigating a complaint about a phony Romeo and a ge- neral warning is out for anyone to be wary of the con. In the“romance scam”the target is tricked into believing that the con artist has roman- tic intentions. The victim may be a man or a woman and the con artist may be a man or a woman in person, or pretend to be either through use of fake profiles on an Internet dating site, or email or through regular posted letters. Most often the pretend- Romeo claims to be from another country.

but is living for now in Canada or maybe living in the U.S. for various reasons. So- metimes the reason given for the money request is to “help” with immigration appli- cation problems. More information about the “romance scam” is available on the Canadian An- ti-Fraud Centre website: www.anti- fraudcentre.ca. Council case still in court GREGG CHAMBERLAIN GREGG.CHAMBERLAIN@EAP.ON.CA L’ORIGNAL | The court case against three members of Clarence-Rockland council will switch venues for its next session. The latest pre-trial conference took place behind closed doors April 9 at the provin- cial courthouse in L’Orignal between Crown counsel and the lawyers representing Clarence-Rockland Mayor Marcel Guibord, Councillors Diane Choinière and Guy Fé- lio, and local lawyer and businessman Sté- phane J. Lalonde. All four are charged with breach of trust and Lalonde is also charged with counsel- ing breach of trust. The charges resulted from an OPP investigation of a series of email exchanges between the four follow- ing the 2010 civic election. The subject of many of the emails concerned Daniel Ga- tien, who was the city director at the time. Details of the pre-trial conference are not available but general practice is for Crown and defence to review and discuss any outstanding disclosure issues and other matters before the next stage in the court process. The next pre-trial conference will take place at the Ottawa provincial courthouse. No date was specified yet at press time but one will be chosen suitable for the sched- ules of all the legal counsels. The case will return to L’Orignal for the July 30 provincial court session to set a date for the next stage in the process. LIMOGES | The search continues for new and better source of drinking water to supply the growing village of Limoges. Last year The Nation municipality, with the support of Russell Township, launched a drilling program to find a larger source of drinking water for the Village of Limoges. The village straddles the border of the two municipalities but the major part of Limoges is located on The Nation side of the line. Limoges is experiencing a development boom and The Nation has contracted Gol- den & Associates to manage an environ- mental assessment project (EA) to deter- mine a potential larger source of drinking water for the community from a local esker to support both the present population and also future growth in the area. The provincial government has also ap- proved the EA plan. Local property owners were informed of the project. 0!.ŏ$1*0ŏ%*ŏ %)+#!/

After gaining the victim’s trust, the con artist then make up a story about an urgent need for money to help deal with a crisis. Sometimes the wording of the demand is designed so that the con artist does not ask for the money but lets the victim make the offer instead as a show of their own since- rity about the relationship. The money is sent and either the con artist breaks off the relationship without warning or comes back with another care- fully-worded plea for help and continues to milk the victim until they have nothing left. Warning signs of a possible “romantic scam” include: requests for wire money

transfers to a foreign country or requests to cash cheques for the con artist, or requests from small gifts before an actual demand for money is made. If a con artist meets the intended victim through an Internet dating site, he or she will soon ask to switch contact to either an email or cellphone link. The scammer often claims to have fallen in love with the victim after a short period of time and without ever meeting them in person. They claim the person’s profile or personality through the email or phone message exchange as the reason. The scammer will claim to be from abroad
