No voter left behind in Ottawa

OTTAWA | Voters in the Cumberland Ward and elsewhere in the City of Ottawa will still be dealing with paper ballots during the October municipal election. Ottawa city council approved a plan from its finance and development committee to make sure that no voter gets left behind on Election Day. Ottawa Elections Office will build on its 2010 elections accessibility project in ma- king sure the local civic election meets pro- vincial accessibility standards for voters. The office will do reviews of all polling stations with an accessibility checklist to make sure they all meet provincial guide- lines. Sites will also have supplies of large- print ballots, magnifying sheets, braille lists of candidates, and braille ballot templates for the use of voters who are either blind or have severe vision problems. A cellphone on standby link to Elections call centre staff will also be available. All advance vote sites and mobile polls set up in seniors homes and long-term care facilities will come equipped with a voter assist terminal (VAT). The VAT allows voters with disabilities to mark their ballots in pri- vate and on their own. A VAT has bilingual audio and visual support aids using head- phones and a 19-inch monitor screen with adjustable angles. It also offers assistive input devices for people who need them to navigate and mark their ballot. These devices include an audio-tactile interface (ATI) with braille, a sip-puff, and paddles for paraplegics who have limited use of their arms and hands. Elections Ottawa has a registration and certification process for electors who may not be able to vote on election day or du- ring advance polls but want to designate a proxy to cast their ballot. The office also plans to host demonstrations in shopping centres throughout the City of Ottawa in the weeks before the election to explain its voter accessibility project and show how the various aids work. Details of the voter accessibility project will also be available at www.ottawa.ca and through voter notice mailouts. L’ORIGNAL | The United Counties of Pres- cott-Russell (UCPR) will help share in the cost of monitoring and protecting drinking water sources in Eastern Ontario. The coun- ties council gave unanimous approval to a request from the Eastern Ontario Water Re- sources Committee (EOWRC) for a $50,000 contribution this year to the group’s various projects and programs aimed at protecting surface water sources and also improving public awareness of surface water sources that supply drinking water through either municipal systems or private wells, inclu- ding decommissioning old wells.
