Frederick DELIUS (1862–1934) Ethel SMYTH (1858–1944) String Quartets Villiers Quartet
The String Quartet in E minor by Ethel Smyth, one of the most innovative and original figures in English music, has a masterful coherence and consistency. With eloquent writing for the viola in particular, it is both playful and reverential, and ends with a flourish – forthright, bold and uncompromising, like Smyth herself. Delius wrote the early String Quartet in 1888 but it was rejected for performance and he was later to reuse the Scherzo for his mature Quartet of 1916–19 (8.573586). In 2018 the score of the two opening movements of the 1888 Quartet , long assumed lost, reappeared at auction and have been edited and reunited with the final two in this premiere recording, which adds significantly to our understanding of Delius’ early compositional directions. Key Features: • This album is the first recording of the complete 1888 Delius String Quartet , following the quartet’s previous Naxos release of the original 1916 Delius String Quartet (8.573586) where it was coupled with the Elgar Quartet . ‘Performances of both pieces are excellent. The styles greatly differ, but the Villiers is at home in both. Their intonation is firm, with rhythms and phrasing reinforcing the structural integrity of both works’, wrote American Record Guide . • The Villiers focuses on British works as seen with their Peter Racine Fricker disc on 8.571374 about which Gramophone wrote, ‘Listening to these marvellously sympathetic, well- prepared performances from the Villiers Quartet, one wonders why they are not better known.’ They are also a strong presence on a William Sterndale Bennett disc on 8.571379: ‘Brilliant and scintillating are adjectives that could be used to describe these performances as well’ ( Fanfare ). • Robert Still’s four quartets can be heard on 8.571353: ‘No praise can be too high for these sublimely articulate and concentrated readings by the Villiers Quartet, for whose leader, James Dickenson, the whole project was very much a labour of love. Admirable sound and balance, too’ ( Gramophone ).

The broad curiosity of the Villiers Quartet and its passion for teaching and performing have made the ensemble a valuable resource for students and audiences alike. 150 RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (1872–1958)
YEARS
Featuring Vaughan Williams’ masterly and intensely personal Five Mystical Songs , this album reflects on the sources of inspiration of some of his sacred choral works, alongside gems of 19th- and early- 20th-century English church music. Often setting the poetry of the King James Bible, the finely spun melodies and sensitivity to word- rhythm of composers from S.S. Wesley to Herbert Howells result in a uniquely British form of expression.
Key Features: •
There never needs to be any excuse for recording the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, but his 150th birthday anniversary most certainly deserves marking. This wide-ranging mixture of popular and less familiar choral anthems from the British Isles is attractive enough, but it is also crowned by a fabulous recording in a new version with organ of the by no means over- exposed Five Mystical Songs that Vaughan Williams wrote for the Three Choirs Festival in 1911. This is indeed a programme that satisfies at every level. • A Vaughan Williams Anthology (8.508021) 8-disc boxed set was released earlier in 2022 for the anniversary, which included some of the most successful Vaughan Williams titles on the Naxos catalogue. ‘There isn’t a dud performance in sight!’ exclaimed Daily Mail . ( ) • • Williams’ recordings with pianist Iain Burnside include Songs of Travel (8.557643) and Willow-Wood (8.557798), and received a Gramophone Award nomination and was considered ‘an essential addition to the Vaughan Williams discography’. ( ClassicsToday.com ) • Martin Ford ’s wide-ranging freelance career encompasses a variety of work as an organist, piano accompanist, choral director and teacher. He previously joined the Vasari Singers on their 40th anniversary album Heaven Full of Stars (8.574179), in which ‘the whole programme is mesmerizing and the performances are exquisite… Most are a cappella, but the ones with accompaniment are beautifully served by organist Martin Ford.’ ( American Record Guide Critic’s Choice) Star of the Five Mystical Songs is Roderick Williams , one of the UK’s most sought-after concert and opera baritones and winner of the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society’s Singer of the Year award. His Naxos recordings include a contribution to the ‘unusual and moving’ ( BBC Music Magazine ) Flowers of the Field album (8.573426).
About the Vasari Singers The Vasari Singers was founded in 1980 and is regarded as one of the leading chamber choirs in Britain. Under the direction of its founder conductor Jeremy Backhouse , Vasari Singers performs a wide range of repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary. Many of the choir’s recordings have received high acclaim, achieving chart successes and similar recommendations. During the moratorium

Robert SCHUMANN (1810–1856) Symphony No. 1 ‘Spring’ Symphony No. 2 Re-orchestrated by Gustav Mahler ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop
WATCH VIDEO TRAILER
Key Features: •
About Marin Alsop, Conductor Marin Alsop is chief conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra , which she leads at Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, and on recordings, broadcasts and tours. Her discography includes acclaimed Naxos recordings of symphonies by Brahms with the London Philharmonic, Dvořák with the Baltimore Symphony, and Prokofiev with the São Paulo Symphony. The first and only conductor to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, Alsop received the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award and was the first woman to conduct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. She is director of graduate conducting at the Peabody Institute and holds honorary doctorates from Yale University and The Juilliard School. Robert Schumann’s works lie at the centre of German Romanticism, with an essentially lyrical style that reflects his quintessential place among the great German composers. From 1840 Schumann switched from writing, primarily, piano music and Lieder, to writing orchestral music, with the joyful First Symphony written in just four days, and the uplifting tone of the Second Symphony a remarkable triumph over depression and illness. But the effectiveness of Schumann’s orchestration in his symphonies has been the cause of much debate. Gustav Mahler’s re-orchestrations from the early 1900s provide models of tasteful modification that are suited to the larger orchestras of today.
Robert Schumann’s symphonies are deservedly popular, the undeniable quality of their music transcending any doubts about their original orchestration. Today’s historically informed performances have brought us closer to Schumann’s original conception, but Mahler’s subtle re-orchestrations were made in the light of instrumental developments and the increase in size of the typical symphony orchestra towards the beginning of the 20th century, and as a result are still of great benefit today. • Conductor Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice in the international music scene whose many Naxos recordings include a complete cycle of symphonies by Brahms and Prokofiev. Her 8-Disc set of the orchestral music of her mentor Leonard Bernstein (8.508018), was considered by ClassicsToday.com to present ‘performances as fine as Bernstein’s own, and sometimes even better’. • An ensemble of international renown, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (Vienna RSO) is a paragon of Viennese orchestral tradition. Known for its exceptional programming, the orchestra combines 19th-century repertoire with contemporary works and rarely performed pieces from other periods. • The Vienna RSO has recorded widely for the OehmsClassics and Capriccio labels, and its Naxos releases include an ‘inspiring and enjoyable’ ( BBC Music Magazine ) recording of Florence Price’s Third Symphony (8.559897) and, also with Marin Alsop, Henze’s Nachtstücke und Arien (8.574181) in performances that are ‘assured and lyrical’ ( MusicWeb International ).

BUY NOW!
Meyerbeer was a precocious composer and this album traces some of his very earliest works. Der Fischer und das Milchmädchen was his first stage work, a charming rural vignette that contains all the essential features of a ballet-divertissement couched in writing that enchantingly evokes the 18th century. Collaborating with his teacher, the Abbé Georg Vogler, Meyerbeer composed Der Admiral in 1811. The following year saw Wirt und Gast with the vivid Oriental exoticism of its Janissary music, while Romilda e Constanza , his first italian opera, shows his complete assimilation of Rossinian models. Key Features: • These are mostly previously unrecorded works. The score used in Wirt und Gast is the original conducting score which contains small pencil corrections made by Meyerbeer’s fellow pupil, Weber, who conducted the work. • Conductor Dario Salvi has recorded an album of Meyerbeer’s sacred music on 8.573907 where American Record Guide commented: ‘Salvi’s arrangements work very well; they sound like they could have been written by Meyerbeer himself and they never get in the way of the texts. The trumpet has had many concertos written for it by composers from the Soviet era and beyond. Appealing in its unabashed melodies and colourfully nostalgic feel, Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto became popular in the West, while Weinberg’s emotive Trumpet Concerto in B flat major was summed up by Shostakovich as a ‘symphony for trumpet and orchestra’. Shostakovich’s own playful Concerto No. 1, Op. 35 is recorded here with Timofei Dokschizer’s extended trumpet part, bringing it closer to the Baroque ‘double concerto’ model that the composer may initially have intended. Key Features: • The three works featured on this recording each has a connection with virtuoso trumpeter Timofei Dokshizer, who commissioned and premiered a succession of such pieces. A major attraction for this release is Paul Merkelo playing Shostakovich’s extremely popular Piano Concerto No. 1 (which also features acclaimed pianist Jae-Hyuck Cho ) in a version with archival cadenzas and ornamentation by Timofei Dokschizer. • Appearing here in his Naxos debut, Paul Merkelo has been hailed as ‘the new Maurice André’ by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation , and is recognised as ‘a spectacular soloist... a most impressive master of his instrument’ ( Montreal Gazette ) who ‘knows no limits’ ( Der Spiegel Online ) with ‘unusual lyrical gifts’ ( Gramophone ).
