The Generation 3.0 samples, which are various examples of food packaging, are an evolution from the 1.0 version first presented at K 2019 — they are now converted and printed on real scale equipment. Study: Plastic Recycling A “Failed Concept” Plastic recycling rates are declining even as pro- duction shoots up, according to a Greenpeace USA report that blasted industry claims of creating an efficient, circular economy as “fiction.” Titled “Circular Claims Fall Flat Again,” the study found that of 51 million tons of plastic waste gen- erated by U.S. households in 2021, only 2.4 million tons were recycled, or around five percent. After peaking in 2014 at 10 percent, the trend has been decreasing, especially since China stopped accept- ing the West’s plastic waste in 2018. Virgin production — of non-recycled plastic, that is — meanwhile is rapidly rising as the petrochem- ical industry expands, lowering costs. Practice Over Theory According to Greenpeace USA’s survey, only two types of plastic are widely accepted at the nation’s 375 material recovery facilities. The first is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly used in water and soda bot- tles; and the second is high density polyethylene (HDPE), seen in milk jugs, shampoo bottles and cleaning product containers. These are numbered

“1” and “2” according to a standardized system in which there are seven plastic types. But being recyclable in theory doesn’t mean prod- ucts are being recycled in practice. The report found that PET and HDPE products had actual reprocessing rates of 20.9 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively — both down slightly from Greenpeace USA’s last survey in 2020. Plastic types “3” through “7” — including chil- dren’s toys, plastic bags, produce wrappings, yo- gurt and margarine tubs, coffee cups and to-go food containers — were reprocessed at rates of less than five percent. Despite often carrying the recycling symbol on their labels, products that use plastic types “3” through “7” fail to meet the Federal Trade Commis- sion classification of recyclable. This is because recycling facilities for these types aren’t available to a “substantial majority” of the population, defined as 60 percent, and because the collected products are not being used in the man- ufacturing or assembly of new items, according to the report. According to the report, there were five main rea- sons why plastic recycling is a “failed concept.” First, plastic waste is generated in vast quantities (Cont’d on Page 9)

same as all standard flexible packaging materials, but will disappear in 5-6 years. The enzymatic process breaks down the film into CO2, methane, and water, with many municipal landfills collecting methane to use as an energy source. Outlook Group has been a 98 percent landfill-free manufacturing facility for more than a decade. Labelink Acquires Pro Label Labelink, said to be as Canada’s largest private- ly-owned package printing manufacturer, has ac- quired Pro Label in Appleton, Wisconsin. Pro Label is a privately-owned business with 30 years of experience in creating labels and specialty prints. Expanding Business Since its debut in 1992 printing window and door labels, Pro Label has expanded into many specialty applications and a workforce of 120 people. Pro Label will maintain its client portfolio and op- erate as Pro Label LLC — A division of Labelink. The current leadership team remains in place to ensure business continuity and market guidance.

Outlook Group has again won the Wisconsin Man- ufacturers & Commerce (WMC) Business Friend of the Environment (BFOE) Award for Sustainability. This 32nd Annual BFOE award highlights what Wisconsin companies are doing in the areas of sus- tainability, innovative technology and environmen- tal stewardship. Focused On Film For this year’s award, Outlook Group focused on printed flexible packaging films. In response to retailer and consumer demands, the flexible packaging industry has introduced a myriad of recycle-ready, compostable, and biode- gradable material structures. Outlook Group introduces packaging products that will biodegrade in a standard landfill environ- ment and do not require consumers to change their recycling habits, according to the company. Biodegradable films are engineered to undergo an enzymatic degradation process that is initiated by the heat and pressure that are presented in an anaerobic environment that exists in U.S.-based landfills. Outlook Group’s “Oil2Soil” films perform the

Sustainable Packaging Films To Reach $278.41B A newly published report titled “Global Sustain- able Films for Packaging Market” by InsightAce An- alytic Pvt. Ltd., features detailed industry analysis and an extensive study on the market, exploring its significant factors. Improving Life Cycle The global Sustainable Films for Packaging mar- ket is estimated to reach more than $278.41 billion by 2030, exhibiting a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 7.54 percent during the forecast period.

The creation and usage of sustainable packaging films result in better sustainability. This includes greater use of life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cy- cle assessment (LCA) to help guide package use, reducing environmental effects and ecological foot- print. Sustainable packaging films are likely the best alternative for decreasing plastic waste. The market for sustainable films for packaging is anticipated to increase enormously over the next few years due to the rising emphasis on the circular economy and the government’s strengthening laws to limit single-use plastics. Easy Adoption Various end-use industries are adopting sustain- able packaging, including food and beverage, phar- maceutical, consumer electronics, personal care, and consumer goods. The food and beverage sector generates a sizeable amount of plastic garbage and is the world’s largest consumer of single-use plastic packaging.

Recycling (Cont’d from Page 5) and is extremely difficult to collect — as becomes clear during what the report called ineffective “vol- unteer cleanup stunts” funded by nonprofits such as “Keep America Beautiful.” Second, even if it were all collected, mixed plastic waste cannot be recycled together, and it would be “functionally impossible to sort the trillions of piec- es of consumer plastic waste produced each year,” the report said. Third, the recycling process itself is environmen- tally harmful, exposing workers to toxic chemicals and itself generating microplastics. Fourth, recycled plastic carries toxicity risks through contamination with other plastic types in collection bins, preventing it from becoming food- grade material again. Fifth and finally, the process of recycling is pro- hibitively expensive.

OMNI Systems Moves Into Prime Labels

OMNI Systems, Cleveland, Ohio, has installed sev- en new Mark Andy presses since 2019, all of them fitted with Martin Automatic MBS unwind/splicers. OMNI now has 20 Mark Andy presses installed parallel to each other from 7 inches to 20 inches, and all are fitted with Martin MBS systems. Highlighting the repeatability of its volume busi- ness, OMNI says that one of its presses has run the same job, with only minor color variations, 24/7 for the past 10 years. Established in 1990 and wholly owned by Adam DeFrancesco, the company built its business on sim- ple one-, two- and three-color work, which in 2020 generated sales close to $95 million and showed a five-year increase of 65 percent. To move into prime labels, the company installed a Mark Andy Performance Series P7E press earlier this year, fitted with a Martin Automatic MBS un- wind/splicer, and ordered a second identical con- figuration, which is due toward the end of 2022. The latest Mark Andy presses have the 20-inch web width and are fitted with Vetaphone corona treaters for film label applications, 10-UV flexo print units and turn bars. The Martin MBS units offer non-stop operation with built-in roll loading for a variety of substrates from film to laminate and paperboard, with a maxi- mum roll diameter of 50 inches and top production speed of 300 meters per minute.
