Malia, a young girl with a kind and tender heart, loved exploring the Greenhills with her family. Her passion for nature and animals led her to volunteer at the local veterinary hospital, where she spent her free time nurturing animals with story-time and companionship. On this particular hike, Malia heard a faint moaning sound coming from the trees. She wandered off in the direction in search of what she thought might be an animal in need. To her surprise, in a small hollow at the base of a large old oak tree, she found a baby dragon, abandoned by her evil aunt. She knelt down to the dragon and offered water and comfort. Not seeing any other dragons around to come to her aid, Malia took her jumper from her backpack and wrapped the small creature, to keep her warm. She put the dragon in her backpack and quickly returned to reunite with her family.
She named the dragon Magi, and decided that she would do everything she could to help the baby dragon, sharing the secret only with her younger sister, Hailey. She said, ‘’I will take care of her and I will help her to get better, and I will teach her the ways of her new world”. As days passed, Magi grew bigger and stronger, and their bond deepened. Malia and Magi spent long summer evenings by the canal, pledging their eternal friendship, and as dusk settled across the land, Malia returned home and Magi retreated to her hiding spot among the great oaks. Malia visited daily, ensuring their connection remained strong.
One day while sitting by the canal, they heard a loud whooshing sound. Magi jumped into action, to protect Malia from any dangers. Then landing beside them, a beautiful shimmering purple dragon stood tall, with a majestic wingspan. They were both startled. “Do not be afraid” the dragon said, “I’m not here to hurt you”. “I am Amaranthyst, I am your cousin and I was sent here to find you.” “We have been looking for you for a long time.” “You are Luminara, the Healing Seraphim”, “Daughter of the great “Seraphina the Luminary”, healer of our lands, Elarion.” “You must return with me immediately, as our land and animals are in great danger of extinction.” Magi was confused. “I’m Magi, I have lived here all my life”. “I don’t know anything about what you speak.” Malia grew nervous as something inside her told her that this was Magi’s calling and that she would need to go. The day she feared would one day come, had indeed arrived.
Amaranthyst began to explain. Many years ago, you were born in Elarion, a great kingdom of mythical creatures. You were the pride of the Enchanted Fauna Realm. Your presents meant healing and love to all who gazed upon you. Luminara, or Magi as she had always been called, felt a stirring inside her. Deep in her heart she felt Amaranthyst spoke the truth, but she did not want to leave Malia or the life she knew.
“How did I get here?” Luminara exclaimed. “Many years ago, following your joyous birth in our land, our aunt, Noctara the Shadowbane, took you away and returned without you. She told us you had been killed by human dragon slayers and that she was lucky to escape”. Your mother never gave up hope that one day you would return.” “As your mother retreated to her lair, grief stricken, Noctara the Shadowbane took control of our realm and cast a sickness over the creatures. Only she holds the medicine to keep them alive. They work for her in exchange for the medicine. They bring her the daily spoils and she commands to be treated like royalty. You are the only one who can stop her evil way and heal the creatures, you must come with me now, before it is too late.”
Reluctant to leave Malia, Luminara turned to her and with a tear in her eye, she whispered softly, “I must go”, “if what Amaranthyst says is true”, “then the creatures of Elarion need me”. Before gracefully taking to the skies, she looked one more time at Malia and said, “I will be back”.
Not knowing where Elarion was or how long it would take to get there, Malia was anxious as to whether she would ever see her friend again. She was sad and proud all at the same time. Proud that she was the one that found Luminara and called her Magi. Maybe Malia already knew deep down in her heart that Luminara was magical from their first encounter so long ago. Malia visited the spot by the canal daily in hopes of seeing her friend Luminara again, but as days turned into weeks and then years, Malia was growing up and didn’t have the time to visit the woods. She often wished her well and imagined that she was doing great healing work in Elarion and they needed her there, more than Malia did, but she couldn’t help but miss her friend that she had cared for and taught so much to.
Malia continued on with her studies and tried very hard to be a normal teenager, but how many other teenagers had gotten to take care of, and save a dragon. It was her’s and Haileys secret to keep. Not everyone believes in Dragons or places like Elarion, but Malia knew it existed. She continued loving and helping all animals in need, believing they were as important as Luminara and needed love and care to do their work in this earthly realm.
One day, with a chance visit to the woods, while sitting watching the still waters of the canal float by, she heard that once familiar whooshing sound. Momentarilarily startled, Malia’s heart skipped a beat, it was indeed her friend Luminara returning. Malia was overcome with joy and also surprised at how much Luminara had grown and how beautiful and glistening her scales were, that seemed to reflect the sun and make all the trees and plants around magically come alive. Lumianra was also surprised at how grown Malia had become. “You have grown to be a beautiful young woman”, Luminara said. “I have been keeping my eye on you”, “I did not want to reveal my presence, as I wanted you to shine in your own light”. “Your heart is big and it is a beacon for all creatures in need of love and care”. “Others needed you”.
They sat for hours and shared stories of the years that had passed. They giggled and smiled, and sometimes a little teary. Luminara told Malia of Elarion, and the sickness that the evil Noctara had cast on the creatures and how she had held them captive under her control, in exchange for medicine. It turned out that the medicine that was meant to make them better was actually making them sick. It was dragon juice, or the nectar of the Draconis Blossom, loved by all dragons but harmful to smaller creatures. Luminara told Malia of how she traveled to Solareal, the ethereal land known for its healing plants and luminous landscapes. There Luminara found the antidote, the "Phoenix Tear Berry." This rare and mystical berry has the unique ability to neutralize the toxicity of the Draconis Blossom's nectar for other creatures. Once administered, the creatures quickly recovered, and the evil Noctara no longer had control.
Luminara, Seraphina and Amaranthyst, stood watch over the land of Elarion and made sure that no other harm came to the creatures. The land was bountiful and creatures lived in harmony with the plants and trees and enjoyed the warmth of their sun while the fairies made beautiful music, blowing on the blades of grass. It was indeed a much happier time in Elarion.
As the summer sun began to dip below the treetops, Luminara looked sorrowfully at Malia. “I must go,” she said. “I must go and take care of Elarion”, “and all her creatures”. “But before leaving, I must give you something.” Malia looked at Luminara in joyful apprehension, as Luminara plucked a scale from her chest. It was a beautiful glowing scale that Luminara fashioned in a necklace and placed it around Malia’s Neck. “From my heart to your heart”, “we will always be together”. “When you wear this necklace, just know that you too can help heal the creatures of your land”, Before Malia could ask another question, Luminara flapped her very large wings and took to the sky. “Goodbye my friend”, Malia said softly. “I will miss you, but I will carry you always in my heart.”
Malia went on to study hard, and learn all she could about helping sick animals. She gave them the proper medicine, nursed their wounds and each time she leaned over to kiss their forehead, scratched under their chin and say, you’re all better now, her necklace dangled and sparkled over the little creature, as if Luminara was lending a hand.
Their friendship endured across realms, a testament to the power of love, courage, and the belief in the extraordinary.
